Demi Moore Describes 'Vulnerable Experience' Going Fully Nude in New Movie 'The Substance'

Demi Moore bravely embraced her role in the new horror film, The Substance.

In a recent press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, the 61-year-old actress shared her experience filming nude scenes for the movie directed by Coralie Fargeat. Moore revealed that she was fully aware of the level of vulnerability and rawness needed to effectively portray the story on screen. She emphasized the importance of approaching the scenes with sensitivity and having open conversations with the team about their goals and approach, ultimately building a foundation of mutual trust.

Moore plays the role of a former Hollywood starlet who tries the film’s namesake drug, leading to the emergence of a younger version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley. The drug takes a toll on Moore’s character, causing physical changes while Qualley’s youthful character thrives.

Moore commended Qualley, 29, for being a “wonderful partner who made me feel secure,” especially during the filming of nude scenes. She mentioned, “There were moments where we were quite close, naked, which brought a sense of humor to the absurdity of those situations as we lay on the tile floor together. Ultimately, it all boils down to clear communication and mutual trust.”

At The Substance's Cannes premiere on Sunday, May 19, Moore and Qualley were joined by director Fargeat and costar Dennis Quaid on the red carpet. The film received an impressive 11-minute standing ovation from the audience. Moore stood out in a striking cream gown with a 3D bodice, while Qualley and Fargeat opted for pale pink dresses. Quaid looked sharp in a black suit paired with a white dress shirt.

Despite her character's transformation in The Substance, Moore has been turning heads with her timeless beauty at various public events. Earlier this year, she looked radiant posing with her daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March.

She rocked a black bra and briefs under a sparkly mesh dress at the opening of the From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce & Gabbana exhibition in Milan in April. After that, Moore was seen wearing a leopard-print bikini while on a tropical vacation with her kids, whom she shares with ex-husband Bruce Willis.

Before attending the Gucci Cruise 2025 fashion show with her chihuahua, Pilaf, on May 13, Moore made a stunning appearance embodying a flower at the 2024 Met Gala on May 6. She wore a beautiful black Harris Reed gown with a pink floral design, featuring protruding shoulders and black feathers that made the dress look like a piece of art.

In addition to wearing natural glam and her hair down, Moore’s ensemble was completed with dazzling diamond and emerald jewelry pieces by Cartier.

"It was a wonderful experience to work with an amazing team on this #MetGala look. I will always remember this special moment," she shared on Instagram on May 7 along with photos from the event.
