Leave the World Behind ending explained: Family vacation gone wrong
One morning, frustrated advertising executive Amanda Sandford (Julia Roberts) spontaneously decides to book a trip to Long Island. She convinces her husband, Clay (Ethan Hawke), that the family deserves a break and they pack up their two children – one of whom is obsessed with the TV show Friends – and head out. Upon arriving at a luxurious house, they soon head to the beach. It is there that their youngest child Rose (Farrah Mackenzie) notices a boat on the horizon, which soon gets so close that it rocks up on the beach. Fleeing back to the house, Amanda wants to find out what happened, but all internet, phone, and TV service has gone down.
Later that evening, G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la) show up at the doorstep, claiming ownership of the house. They request to stay in the downstairs portion of the house for 50% of the price, citing the day's strange events happening across the country. Amanda is suspicious and questions G.H., while Clay is more relaxed about the situation. Ruth insists that they have a right to be in their own home. As they talk, a national emergency broadcast interrupts their conversation, revealing a mysterious cyberattack affecting the nation.
The next morning, the Sandfords and Scotts are still unaware of what is happening. Deer gather in the garden, causing Rosie to feel unsettled as she tries to watch TV. Amanda informs Ruth about news alerts on her phone suggesting hackers are responsible for the outage, urging Ruth to keep the situation secret from the children. However, Ruth disagrees and expresses her belief that the situation is serious. G.H. and Ruth also discuss the whereabouts of Ruth's mother, who is working away from home.

G.H. attempts to text his wife while driving to his neighbor's house, only to find it completely trashed and empty. Meanwhile, Clay drives away in search of a cell signal and hears a radio report about an environmental disaster impacting animal migration. Rose shares her sighting of deer with her brother Archie, claiming they were trying to communicate something. As Clay stops his car, he encounters a panicked Spanish-speaking woman before driving on. G.H. discovers the Huxleys' bodies on the beach, while Archie and Rose explore an abandoned hut in the woods. These events unfold simultaneously, with Clay being followed by a plane emitting red confetti. At the beach, another plane crashes near G.H., nearly killing him. Elsewhere, Amanda and Ruth remain by the pool as tensions rise.
The answer isn’t exactly clear-cut
Upon returning to the house, G.H. decides not to disclose the events at the Huxley house to Amanda in front of Ruth. He later confides in her, expressing his belief that the situation is more significant than they realize. Suddenly, a high-pitched electronic tone reverberates through the house, causing windows to crack. Once it ceases, Amanda successfully relocates the children. The adults agree to remain indoors until Clay returns, while Amanda and Ruth nearly come to blows. Clay eventually returns unscathed, only to discover that the red confetti bears the ominous message: "Death to America."
The Sandfords head to New Jersey to stay with Amanda’s sister, while Ruth confronts G.H. about not informing her about the plane. As they drive, they encounter a line of cars crashing on autopilot. They head back and gradually grow closer to the Scotts. G.H. confides in Amanda about his belief that no one is truly in control, and implies that some of his acquaintances are conspiracy theorists. Clay and Ruth develop their own theories, while Rose is distraught about not being able to watch the finale of Friends.
A group of flamingos suddenly appears in the pool at the house, accompanied by the return of the high-pitched noise. Overnight, it appears as though there is an eclipse and Archie wakes up the next morning to find his teeth have fallen out. G.H. suggests the group seek help from survivalist Danny (played by Kevin Bacon), whom Amanda first noticed at the grocery store when they arrived. As Archie begins to vomit blood and Rose goes missing, G.H. and Clay take Archie to Danny, who is only concerned with protecting his own family. Meanwhile, Ruth and Amanda encounter a group of deer in the forest while searching for Rose, and the deer refuse to leave.
The conclusion of Leave the World Behind shows Clay mediating between G.H. and Danny after they start to turn against each other, and he manages to secure medication for Archie. Each of the three has their own theories about who is behind the attack, with the conclusion that America is on the verge of an all-out invasion. G.H. explains his belief that a three-pronged strategy of isolation, synchronized chaos, and civil war is being used to destabilize the government from within. From the forest, Amanda and Ruth witness New York City being enveloped in a cloud of smoke in the distance.

As an enthusiastic fan of the movie "Leave the World Behind," I am captivated by its enigmatic ending that leaves me with a whirlwind of emotions and unanswered questions. The film's ability to evoke such a profound sense of uncertainty and contemplation is a testament to its masterful storytelling. The ambiguous nature of the conclusion invites viewers to engage in their own interpretations, sparking discussions and theories about the underlying themes and messages.
The film's exploration of the characters' reactions to the unfolding crisis is particularly intriguing. The Sandfords and Scotts, two families from different backgrounds, are forced to confront their vulnerabilities and grapple with the fragility of their existence in a world turned upside down. The tension between Amanda's skepticism and Clay's open-mindedness, as well as the contrasting perspectives of Ruth and Rose, adds depth to the narrative and keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The film's exploration of human nature in the face of adversity is both thought-provoking and unsettling, leaving a lasting impact on the audience.
