Death toll rises to 10 as massive tornadoes wreak havoc in eastern Chinese cities

Devastating tornadoes leave a trail of destruction in China's eastern Jiangsu province, claiming the lives of 10 people and wreaking havoc in two cities

Two cities in China's eastern Jiangsu province were devastated by two tornadoes, resulting in the unfortunate loss of ten lives. This incident adds to a series of deadly weather phenomena that China has experienced recently, with severe floods and scorching heat waves being major concerns for the country.

A powerful tornado struck Suqian city in Jiangsu province on Tuesday, resulting in the loss of five lives and severe injuries to four individuals, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV. Located on China's eastern coast, Jiangsu province witnessed the destruction of over 130 houses, leading to the relocation of more than 400 people.

Separately, another tornado, more powerful than the previous one, caused the unfortunate death of five individuals and left four others with minor injuries on Tuesday night in Yancheng. This city is situated to the southeast of Suqian and to the north of China's largest city, Shanghai, as stated by CCTV. Further information revealed that as a result of the disaster, 129 people have been relocated.

According to meteorological experts cited by state media Beijing Youth Daily, rare tornadoes have occurred in Jiangsu in mid to late September, which is unusual for this time of year. These tornadoes are believed to be a result of recent higher temperatures and strong weather conditions. Scientists warn that unless the world ceases to burn planet-heating fossil fuels, extreme weather events will continue to increase in frequency and severity.
