Davis Riley showed his appreciation for his sister and former colleague Grayson Murray after securing victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Riley emerged triumphant, defeating Scottie Scheffler and Keegan Bradley to claim his first individual PGA Tour title with a five-shot lead.
He finished the tournament with a final round score of 70, ending on 14-under-par. A birdie on the 17th hole pushed him five strokes ahead, securing his victory effectively.
After winning at Colonial Country Club, the 27-year-old American shared that just a week before, he was unsure if he could concentrate on his golf. This was because his older sister, Caroline, was facing a difficult situation.
Riley shared with the media that he got a call while practicing, informing him that Caroline had a seizure at work. He recalled feeling panicked upon receiving the news.
After having scans done, doctors discovered that she had a brain tumor. Following the recommendation of the medical professionals, she underwent surgery.
Riley admitted that having a loved one go through such a serious health scare can be extremely frightening. The thought of losing his sister was constantly on his mind during this difficult time.
He shared that after the surgery, the doctors were able to successfully remove the brain tumor, and thankfully, it turned out to be non-cancerous. This news brought immense relief to Riley and his family.
Riley wasn't sure if he would play at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He felt uncertain and overwhelmed, but his sister encouraged him to go for it.
Even though his sister couldn't be there in Texas to watch him win his first individual PGA Tour event, Riley delivered a confident performance. He made his sister proud by earning a tartan jacket and the trophy.
“I’m just very fortunate and excited that she was in really good hands and everything is in the right direction,” he said.
