Da Vine Joy Randolph Wins Best Supporting Actress

Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role award at the 2024 Oscars for her role in The Holdovers.
During her acceptance speech on Sunday, March 10, the 37-year-old actress shared, “I never imagined I would end up pursuing acting as a career. I initially started off as a singer, but my mother encouraged me to explore the theater department. I am grateful to my mother for guiding me in the right direction. I also want to express my gratitude to everyone who has supported and mentored me along the way.”
She expressed, "I used to strive to be unique, but now I understand the importance of embracing my true self. Thank you for recognizing that."
The award was given to Randolph by Jamie Lee Curtis, Regina King, Rita Moreno, Mary Steenburgen, and Lupita Nyong’o. They honored Randolph with the award.
Nyongo, 41, praised Da’Vine's performance as a tribute to those who have helped others heal despite their own pain. She also commended Da’Vine for honoring her grandmother by wearing her glasses in the film, allowing her to see the world through her grandmother's eyes and her own.
At the awards ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, other nominees in the same category included Emily Blunt from Oppenheimer, Danielle Brooks from The Color Purple, America Ferrera from Barbie, and Jodie Foster from Nyad.
Heading into the awards show, Blunt, 41, Brooks, 34, Ferrera, 39, and Randolph were all first-time Academy Award nominees. Foster, 61, is a two-time Oscar winner. She received her first nod for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Taxi Driver in 1977 and went on to earn Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Accused in 1989 and The Silence of the Lambs in 1992. She was also up for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Nell in 1995.
Randolph gained recognition for her role as Mary Lamb in The Holdovers before the Academy Awards. She won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards in January, competing against Blunt, Brooks, Foster, Julianne Moore, and Rosamund Pike. In the following month, Randolph triumphed over Blunt, Brooks, Foster, and Penélope Cruz to receive Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Randolph won supporting actress awards at the BAFTAs, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the Independent Spirit Awards.
During her acceptance speech at the SAG Awards in February, Randolph expressed gratitude for her acting opportunities.
How fortunate are we to be able to do what we love? In what other profession can we experience so many different lives and impact so many hearts of people we may never even meet?" she excitedly asked her fellow actors. "I feel grateful every single day to be able to work as an actor."
Randolph then offered words of encouragement to those aspiring to enter the industry. "To all the actors out there waiting for their big break, remember to never give up hope," she urged. "Your life can change in an instant. It's not a matter of if, but when. Keep pushing forward."
