The upcoming 2023 BBC Children in Need telethon will feature a special scene from Doctor Who, showcasing David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. Tennant initially took on this role in the 2022 special episode "The Power of the Doctor." Prior to this, he portrayed the Tenth Doctor from 2005 to 2010, and also made a return appearance in the show's 50th anniversary special in 2013, titled "The Day of the Doctor."
The reason behind the resemblance between the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors is currently unknown. However, this enigma is expected to be resolved in the upcoming three 60th anniversary specials scheduled for late November and early December. These specials will also feature David Tennant and Catherine Tate reuniting, with Tate reprising her role as Donna Noble.
Although the return of these beloved actors is highly anticipated, Tennant has highlighted the distinctiveness of the 60th anniversary specials compared to his previous tenure on the show. Tennant specifically emphasized the uniqueness of the second special, "Wild Blue Yonder," describing it as unlike any other episode of Doctor Who.
Doctor Who returns with David Tennant for Children in Need
The anticipation of Tennant's return as the Doctor in Doctor Who has fans eager to learn more about what his second stint will entail. To satisfy their curiosity, the BBC has decided to offer a sneak peek exclusively to viewers in the UK. In an exciting announcement, the broadcaster revealed that a scene featuring the Fourteenth Doctor, specifically created for the BBC Children in Need telethon, will be showcased on November 17th. This eagerly awaited program will be available to watch on both BBC One and iPlayer.
The announcement comes with an official synopsis of the scene, which introduces the Fourteenth Doctor as they cross paths with a new character portrayed by actor and comedian Mawaan Rizwan. As the story unfolds, the Doctor delves into a long-standing enigma connected to one of their oldest adversaries.
In the promotional image released alongside the announcement, the Fourteenth Doctor can be seen leaning towards a seemingly damaged Dalek. It is speculated (yet not officially confirmed) that the Daleks might be the longstanding enemy alluded to in the synopsis.
This aligns with the storyline in the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip titled "Liberation of the Daleks," which occurs between the events of "Power of the Doctor" and the upcoming 60th anniversary specials. As the title implies, this comic strip portrays a confrontation between the Fourteenth Doctor and the Daleks.
Again, it’s also worth noting that the BBC is yet to officially confirm that the Daleks will indeed feature in the Children in Need special’s Doctor Who scene.
Doctor Who showrunner Ncuti Gatwa won’t fight the Daleks
In contrast, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has already confirmed that the Daleks will not be appearing to threaten Ncuti Gatwa, the successor to Tennant. Davies, who wrote the Children in Need scene and the 60th anniversary specials, stated in a recent interview that he is intentionally giving the beloved villains a break throughout Gatwa's first season as the Fifteenth Doctor.
"It's a fresh start. Ncuti is new, and [the incoming female lead] Millie Gibson is new, and with Disney and the whole new era, it's all new to us," Davies explained his decision for the Dalek embargo. "So I didn't want to dwell too much on the past... there will be no Daleks, no Cybermen. I wanted to focus on the future."

As an enthusiastic fan of Doctor Who, I am thrilled about the return of David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. His portrayal of the Tenth Doctor was iconic, and I can't wait to see what he brings to the role this time around. The fact that he will be reuniting with Catherine Tate as Donna Noble is just the icing on the cake. I'm sure their chemistry will be as electric as ever.
The scene that will be featured on the BBC Children in Need telethon is sure to be a treat for fans. It will be interesting to see how the Fourteenth Doctor interacts with the new character played by Mawaan Rizwan. I'm also curious to learn more about the long-standing enigma connected to one of the Doctor's oldest adversaries. Could it be the Daleks? The Cybermen? The Master? Only time will tell.
Overall, I'm very excited about the future of Doctor Who. With David Tennant back in the TARDIS, and Russell T Davies returning as showrunner, I'm confident that the show is in good hands. I can't wait to see what adventures the Fourteenth Doctor and Donna Noble get up to next.
