Mindhunter, the Netflix show that left many fans wanting more, may have a chance at revival according to a recent interview with David Fincher. Premiering in 2017, the show followed FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench as they delved into the minds of serial killers in an effort to understand and apprehend them.
David Fincher, the director of The Killer and Fight Club, was an executive producer of the series until it was unexpectedly cancelled before its third season. Nearly five years later, one of the stars has hinted that Fincher may be considering reviving the Netflix thriller.
David Fincher is thinking about bringing Mindhunter back
According to Mindhunter star Holt McCallany, David Fincher has been thinking about bringing the show back for a third season.
The Netflix show was abruptly canceled after its second season in 2019 due to budget constraints, sparking immediate backlash from fans.
McCallany told Awards Daily: "I’ve heard that David’s thought about it. I’m not saying it’s going to come back. But what I am saying is that if it comes back, I’m coming back with it. You can take that to the bank, but it’ll depend on what David wants to do. It’s been a few years now, so it’s probably unlikely, but just even that he would think about it is a hopeful sign."
David Fincher spoke to Forbes in February 2023 about the future of the show, expressing his pride in the first two seasons but acknowledging the show's high cost and Netflix's perspective that it did not attract a large enough audience to justify a third season. He expressed gratitude to Netflix for taking risks to launch the show, supporting his film "Mank," and allowing him to explore new creative directions with "The Killer." Fincher also emphasized the importance of working with bold and like-minded individuals, recognizing that if their visions diverge, parting ways may be necessary.
McCallany reiterated to Awards Daily, "While I personally didn't want Mindhunter to end after two seasons, ultimately it's not up to me. It's my friend David's (Fincher) decision. I respect and accept his decision and I'm grateful for the experience." With the potential for Mindhunter Season 3, fans are eagerly speculating about the potential for the show's return.
"Is this really happening? I hope they make it a reality this time! Tired of the usual formulas, this series was the most captivating in ages," one fan expressed on X/Twitter. "MINDHUNTER was a gripping show that delved into criminal profiling psychology. If David Fincher is involved in bringing it back, we can expect even more compelling storytelling and character development," another fan commented.
In the meantime, Holt McCallany will be starring as Fritz Von Erich in A24's The Iron Claw.

As an enthusiastic fan of the critically acclaimed Netflix series "Mindhunter," I am thrilled by the news that David Fincher is considering reviving the show for a third season. The show's premature cancellation in 2019 left many of us yearning for more, and the prospect of its return is nothing short of exhilarating.
Mindhunter captivated audiences with its unique blend of crime, psychology, and suspense. The show's exploration of the minds of serial killers was both fascinating and unsettling, and the performances of the cast, particularly Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, were nothing short of exceptional. The show's cancellation was a huge disappointment, and I believe that a third season would not only provide closure to the story but also allow for further exploration of the complex characters and themes that made the show so compelling.
