The 2013 zombie film World War Z, featuring Brad Pitt, originally had Oscar-nominated director David Fincher lined up to direct a sequel. Although the project never came to fruition, Fincher recently disclosed some details about his conceptual plans, revealing that it would have been reminiscent of HBO's The Last of Us. In a recent interview with GQ, Fincher expressed his contentment with the World War Z sequel's failure, as he believes The Last of Us provides a broader scope for exploring similar themes.
He mentioned that the opening credits for his planned sequel to World War Z would incorporate the same "small parasite" concept that HBO utilized in the opening credits of The Last of Us. Despite the fact that World War Z generated over $540 million globally, a sequel was never produced. This was primarily due to Pitt and Fincher's hectic schedules and concerns regarding the purported $190 million budget. Furthermore, China's restriction on movies containing zombies supposedly influenced the choice to forgo a sequel.
The film World War Z, directed by Marc Forster, was adapted from Max Brooks' 2006 book of the same name. In 2019, a video game based on the film, developed by Saber Interactive, was released.
David Fincher's upcoming film, The Killer, will hit theaters on October 27 and will be available on Netflix in November. Meanwhile, fans of The Last of Us will have to wait as Season 2 is currently being produced, with a potential release date as late as 2025.
