28 Years Later, the long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, has officially been greenlit, with acclaimed director Danny Boyle set to return to direct.
28 Days Later, released in 2002, is commonly hailed as one of the best zombie movies ever made, breathing new life into the genre with its rapid infections and terrifyingly fast undead. While fans got a follow-up with 28 Weeks Later in 2007, it failed to capture the same magic as a new team took the reins.
After years of speculation and rumors, a new installment is finally in the works. Danny Boyle will be directing, with Alex Garland penning the script, reuniting the original 28 Days duo. The team is also set to pitch not only the new sequel, 28 Years Later, but also a potential new trilogy in the Zombie franchise.
Cillian Murphy's breakout role came in 28 Days Later.
The Hollywood Reporter has reported the news of the highly-requested sequel, with sources claiming that Boyle and Garland are set to convene with a range of production companies and streaming platforms this week to strike a deal.
Boyle is set to direct the first film in the new trilogy, 28 Years Later, while Garland will write all three parts. The budget for each installment is reportedly around $75 million. The future of the films is uncertain, but the team is clearly dedicated to reviving the Zombie franchise, more than two decades after their last collaboration.
It is still too early to determine who else may be involved in the project. Although the original project helped launch Cillian Murphy's career, there is no certainty that he would reprise his role as Jim in the Oppenheimer movie. It has been 28 years since the outbreak, so it is unclear if his character is still alive.

As a Gen Z fan, I am thrilled about the news of Danny Boyle returning to direct the sequel to '28 Days Later'. The original movie was a game-changer in the zombie genre, and I have been eagerly waiting for a sequel that can recapture the same level of intensity and suspense. The fact that Boyle and Alex Garland, the original screenwriter, are reuniting for this project gives me high hopes that it will be a worthy successor to the first film.
I am particularly excited about the potential for a new trilogy in the Zombie franchise. The world-building in '28 Days Later' was incredibly immersive, and I would love to see more of this universe explored. The idea of a trilogy also suggests that Boyle and Garland have a larger story to tell, which could lead to some truly epic storytelling. Overall, I am incredibly excited about this news and can't wait to see what Boyle and Garland have in store for us with '28 Years Later' and the potential new trilogy.
