Brazilian soccer star Dani Alves has been released from prison after paying a €1 million bond (around $1.08 million) as required by a Barcelona court. The Supreme Court of Justice of Catalonia announced this on Monday.
The court stated that Alves deposited the money into the account of Section 21 of the Provincial Court of Barcelona in Spain. The 40-year-old athlete was then seen leaving the Brians 2 penitentiary center with his lawyer Inés Guardiola.
On February 22, Alves was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison by the Barcelona provincial court for sexually assaulting a woman in a nightclub in late December 2022.
Following the verdict, Alves' lawyer stated they would appeal the conviction and the sentence. In response, the Barcelona Prosecutor's Office and the plaintiff also declared their intention to appeal Alves' provisional release.
After he leaves prison, the 40-year-old will lose his Brazilian and Spanish passports. He cannot leave Spain and must report to the local court every week.
As a condition of his release, Alves must stay at least one kilometer away from the plaintiff's home, workplace, or any place she goes to regularly. He is not allowed to contact her in any way.
Alves is a highly accomplished soccer player, having won domestic titles in Spain, Italy, and France. He achieved great success by winning three Champions League titles with Barcelona in 2009, 2011, and 2015, as well as the Copa América with Brazil in 2007 and 2019.
