Dangerous Malware Hides in Favorite Minecraft Mods: Beware

Minecraft players should be wary as some of the most popular mods contain harmful malware Downloading these mods can put players' devices at risk, making it important to exercise caution when selecting and downloading mods

Players, particularly children, should be cautious when downloading Minecraft mods as recent reports have shown that several popular mods on platforms like CurseForge and Bukkit have been infected with malware. These platforms offer a wide variety of mods for both Windows and Linux, but it may be best to hold off on downloading any new ones until the issue has been resolved. Minecraft has always had a strong modding community, which has helped expand the game's content and capabilities. However, this also makes it a prime target for those with malicious intent who may use mods to spread malware and steal personal information from unsuspecting players.

Recently, criminals targeted popular Minecraft mod download platforms, CurseForge and Bukkit, by planting malware on popular mods. The malicious actor used the CurseForge platform to create multiple accounts and upload mods that contained malware. They also hacked trustworthy profiles to upload infected mods. The mod API automatically updates the game when mods that a gamer has installed are updated, so even people who did not download the infected mods may be affected. The hackers replaced popular mods like Better Minecraft, Dungeons Arise, Sky Villages, Dunigeonz, Display Entity Editor, Haven Elytra, and others, with Better Minecraft alone having over 4.6 million downloads, highlighting the severity of the breach.

Currently, the affected platforms are working to identify all the compromised Minecraft mods and improve their security measures to prevent further attacks. CurseForge has advised users not to delete their client as it will not stop the malware and will prevent the platform from uploading fixed mods and resolving the issue. They have also recommended the use of a first-party detector tool to help affected players detect hidden malware in their files.

Players who are seeking new ways to enjoy Minecraft can explore the vast array of in-game content and activities. Whether it's creating intricate banners, exploring player-made structures, or joining mini-game servers, there is no shortage of engaging options.
