On Friday, October 13, 2023, the New York Comic Con announced that Tatsuki Fujimoto's Chainsaw Man, an acclaimed and commercially successful dark fantasy manga series, had once again won the prestigious Best Manga Harvey Award. This latest victory marks the third consecutive win for Fujimoto's critically acclaimed work.
In this year's competition, Chainsaw Man was up against a number of well-known manga, including the author's own popular one-shot Goodbye, Eri, and Tatsuya Endo's beloved series Spy x Family. Additionally, Fujimoto's flagship manga surpassed Wataru Nadatani's Cat + Gamer and the iconic Hayao Miyazaki's Shuna's Journey to claim the top prize.
Chainsaw Man manga beats Spy x Family to secure Best Manga Harvey Award
Both Chainsaw Man and Endo's Spy x Family manga series have been nominated for the Best Manga category in the Harvey Awards for the third consecutive year. However, it is worth noting that Chainsaw Man has emerged as the winner in all three years since the category was introduced in 2018. This significant achievement by Fujimoto's flagship series now accounts for half of the total years the category has been part of the awards.Expand Tweet
Over the past three years, Chainsaw Man emerged as the victor in the Best Manga Harvey Award category, triumphing over other talented mangaka and their respective series. In its inaugural year, Kabi Nagata's compelling work, My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, claimed the prestigious prize. The following year, Kohei Horikoshi's acclaimed creation, My Hero Academia, secured the award. Then, in 2020, Kamome Shirahama's enchanting Witch Hat Atelier took home the honor. However, since then, it has been Fujimoto's series that has consistently been crowned the winner.
Before the Best Manga category was introduced, manga entries used to be nominated in the category of Best American Edition of Foreign Material. Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama was the last manga to win in this category, back in 2014. In 2016, ONE and Yusuke Murata's One-Punch Man was nominated but unfortunately did not win in the now-defunct category.
The Harvey Awards sets itself apart by allowing comic book professionals to nominate and choose the winners for outstanding work in the field of comics and sequential art. Unlike other North American comic book industry awards, such as the Eisner Awards, which rely on critics to select the winner.
Fujimoto's highly acclaimed manga series, Chainsaw Man, debuted in December 2018 and ran until December 2020, concluding its first part. The series made a comeback in July 2022 with its second part, and has been consistently serialized since then.
The first part of the anime premiered in October 2022 with 12 episodes, sparking rumors of a potential second season. However, there is no official confirmation regarding its status.
