House speaker hopeful Tom Emmer, who currently serves as the GOP whip, has strategically gathered support from a wide range of ideological and geographical backgrounds in the conference. This has positioned him as the favored candidate among numerous House Republicans as they prepare for a confidential vote on Tuesday to decide their nominee, Republican sources reveal.
However, due to the presence of a packed field comprising at least seven candidates tirelessly campaigning over the weekend to secure a majority of support within the conference, accurately predicting Emmer's chances proves challenging.
Republican sources are unsure if Emmer can secure 217 votes on the floor, even if he wins the nomination. Members of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, who are skeptical of the GOP leadership team, could pose resistance.
Following Rep. Jim Jordan's departure from the race, House Republicans are now seeking a new GOP speaker nominee. This comes after Kevin McCarthy's removal from the position, leaving the chamber without a speaker for over two weeks.
Emmer, a representative from Minnesota, expressed his desire to become the speaker in a letter to his colleagues on Saturday. He aims to bring about "historic change" and has received support from McCarthy, who has endorsed his candidacy. On Sunday, McCarthy encouraged his fellow House members to vote for Emmer, although he did not explicitly state whether he would run for the speakership again.
"He has been present during all of our achievements," stated the California Republican, referring to Emmer. "He stands out among all the other contenders who aspire to run.
"Now is not the moment for someone to gain experience as a speaker. Tom, on the other hand, possesses the ability to seamlessly assume the role from Day 1," McCarthy expressed on NBC's "Meet the Press."
When questioned about reclaiming leadership, McCarthy declined once more.
"I'm not interested in the title. I'll assist in any manner possible," he remarked. "While I endorse Tom Emmer, it's important to note that I remain a dedicated member of Congress and will take on any role necessary to safeguard our nation."
