Courteney Cox reveals how therapy played a role in her past breakup with Johnny McDaid

During an interview on the “Minnie Questions with Minnie Driver” podcast, Courteney Cox opened up about a significant moment in her relationship with Johnny McDaid that occurred approximately five years ago. The former 'Friends' actress shared insights into how therapy influenced their engagement as she discussed the breakup that took place during that time.

Courteney Cox revealed on the “Minnie Questions with Minnie Driver” podcast that her partner Johnny McDaid ended their relationship during a therapy session. This surprising breakup took place around five years ago, when the “Friends” actress and the Snow Patrol musician were engaged.

"After three years together, things got intense and we ended up breaking up during a therapy session," she shared. "I was caught off guard, I didn't see it coming."

They had planned to talk about setting boundaries in their relationship, but he decided to end things instead.

"He broke up with me within the first minute. I was completely caught off guard because we were engaged. It hurt so much," she shared. "It wasn't a surprise for me, he was hurting too much in the relationship."

She went on to explain, "There were unresolved issues that he couldn't handle emotionally, so he had to protect himself."

During the split, Cox focused on herself. She learned how to reclaim her voice and set boundaries. She reflected on her motives in life and her role in the relationship. She even admired McDaid's brave decision.

"It takes a lot of courage to walk away from something that you have a lot of passion for," she expressed. "Whether it's a relationship or anything else. It's much simpler to just stay put, make excuses, and avoid facing the fear of pain. But once you gather the strength to make tough choices and endure the pain, you can't avoid it."

Reflecting on her experience, Cox now feels grateful that it happened, as it ultimately led to a stronger and better relationship when they got back together.

"When we reconnected, our relationship had changed. It helped me understand myself better and how I interact with the world," she shared.

"I reflected on my childhood needs, such as seeking validation from men and struggles with letting go in relationships. Learning not to take things personally and setting boundaries were key. I also found great support from my therapist," she added.

Cox and McDaid went public as a couple in 2013 and were engaged in nine months.

In late 2015, it was announced they had called off their engagement. In 2016, they reunited as partners.
