Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid went to therapy together as a couple, but ended up breaking up during a session.
"It was really intense. We broke up in therapy," Cox, 59, shared on the "Minnie Questions With Minnie Driver" podcast on Wednesday, April 24. "I didn't know it was coming."
Cox and McDaid, who have had an on-and-off relationship since 2013, decided to seek help to establish boundaries in their relationship. However, McDaid surprisingly ended things with Cox right at the beginning of their session. Cox was taken aback by his decision, especially since they were engaged at the time.
Reflecting on the breakup, Cox shared that she was in a lot of pain and dislikes surprises. She acknowledged McDaid as an incredible person who was not trying to catch her off guard. He made the decision to protect himself due to the amount of unresolved issues in their relationship that needed to be addressed.
Cox chose not to dwell on the breakup and instead focused on self-improvement. She kept seeing her therapist alone, even after the breakup happened during a session. By working on herself and becoming the best version she could be, Cox and McDaid decided to give their relationship another try.

Courteney Cox expressed gratitude for the breakup, as it led to a transformed relationship when they reconciled. She reflected on how the experience helped her understand her behavior and needs, stemming from her childhood. Cox realized her desire for admiration from men and the challenges she faced in letting go and setting boundaries in relationships. She credited therapy for guiding her through this self-discovery process.
Ending a relationship that once had a lot of passion but is no longer working can be a brave decision, according to Cox. She mentioned that it is often easier to stay in a relationship, even when it is not working, and make excuses because the fear of pain can be overwhelming. However, she emphasized that once you have the courage to make the decision to end the relationship and face the pain, everything becomes easier.
In September 2023, Cox and McDaid marked their 10th anniversary, remembering when their friend Ed Sheeran first introduced them.
Cox shared a video slideshow of photos showing their memories together, including moments with Sheeran, to celebrate the milestone. She wrote, "10 years ago this guy [Sheeran] introduced me to this guy [McDaid]. Happy anniversary J."
