Couple and their dog saved in Gulf of Mexico as sailboat takes on water

A couple and their dog were rescued from a flooded sailboat in the Gulf of Mexico, 90 miles off Florida's coast The US Coast Guard successfully saved them from the perilous situation

A couple and their dog had to be saved after water started flooding into their sailboat while they were 90 miles off the Gulf Coast of Florida, as stated in a news release from the US Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Sector in St. Petersburg was notified by a digital selective calling alert around 11 a.m. on Saturday that water was entering the mariners' boat through a broken porthole, causing damage to some of its electronic equipment. The couple's alert provided the Coast Guard with their last known position, which enabled an aircrew to locate them about 90 miles off Hernando Beach, Florida, according to the news release.

The video depicts a woman and her dog, both with life vests, being lifted from the water into a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. A rescuer assists them from a metal basket and secures the woman into a seat on the helicopter while she holds onto the small animal.

According to the release, the couple and their pet were in good health when the crew returned them to Air Station Clearwater.

The boat's porthole was damaged due to severe weather, according to Coast Guard spokesperson Santiago Gomez on Wednesday.

Efforts to rescue the sailboat have been organized, but its location was unknown as of Wednesday, Gomez stated.
