Liverpool's hopes for a last-minute equalizer in their Europa League group stage match against Toulouse were crushed when Jarell Quansah's goal, which would have made it 3-3, was disallowed. Once again, VAR finds itself at the center of controversy.
On November 4, 2023, at St. James Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Arsenal FC witnessed a moment when the players encircled referee Stuart Attwell. This gathering occurred as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviewed a goal scored by Newcastle United. Alex Dodd - CameraSport captured this intense scene in the photo.

Spoiler alert: VAR is proving to be box office entertainment in the Premier League - but at what cost to the action?
The visitors' hopes of securing a valuable point were dashed when the young defender's goal in the seventh minute of added time was disallowed due to a handball during the buildup. The game ended with a 3-2 victory for Toulouse, but not without confusion. Initially, the on-field referee, Georgi Kabakov, awarded the goal, only to later change his ruling and consult the replay monitors on the side of the pitch.
After carefully reviewing the footage, he made the decision to disqualify the goal, as he determined that Liverpools Alexis Mac Allister had touched the ball illegally a mere 14 seconds prior to the goal being scored.
This unexpected ruling caused a wave of excitement to sweep through Stadium TFC, with Le Téfécé enthusiastically celebrating their remarkable victory, while the Liverpool players were left extremely angry and frustrated.
"We successfully scored our third goal, and I firmly believe it was indeed a goal, without a doubt. I'm uncertain if the ball even made contact with the hand, but that's the situation," stated Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, during an interview with TNT Sports following the match.
Upon reviewing the footage, it is evident that the ball brushed against Mac Allister's chest before landing on his arm while he aimed to gain control of a clearance. Subsequently, Liverpool initiated a fresh attack, during which Toulouse struggled to clear the ball on multiple occasions, ultimately resulting in Quansah's shot finding the back of the net.

Despite the controversial ending, Klopp acknowledged his team had not been good enough and had made too many "mistakes."
"We lacked aggression. Toulouse emerged victorious in all crucial skirmishes and confrontations. Regrettably, we carelessly surrendered possession," expressed Klopp in frustration during his post-match interview.
"Considering our significant time in possession, it is evident that we should have generated and had the potential to generate more opportunities."
"You cannot afford to let in three goals tonight. It doesn't make any sense, but due to their superior determination and aggressiveness in the tackles, they have earned it. Congratulations to Toulouse."
Chaotic press conference
Toulouse took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with goals by Aron Dønnum and Thijs Dallinga. However, Liverpool managed to reduce the deficit with an own-goal by Cristian Cásseres Jr. Despite having two additional goals denied by VAR, Toulouse regained their two-goal advantage thanks to Frank Magri.
Liverpools Diogo Jota finished off a brilliant solo run in the 89th minute to set up a tense conclusion to the match, which eventually ended in the VAR controversy.

Toulouse's victory propels them to second place in Group E, with Liverpool maintaining their position at the top after winning their previous three matches in the competition.
However, the night turned even more unpleasant for Klopp as he expressed his frustration over the disorganized arrangement of his post-match press conference.
The Toulouse fans were singing and playing drums in close proximity to where Klopp was talking to the reporters, making it difficult for the already frustrated manager to hear the questions.
Klopp, visibly tense, expressed his curiosity about the individual responsible for choosing the location for the press conference. "Who came up with the idea to hold the press conference here? That question would be truly intriguing. Wow," he remarked.
Luis DÃazs father released
It wasnt all bad news for Liverpool on Thursday, though.
Before the game, news broke that Reds forward Luis DÃazs father, who was kidnapped by a Colombian guerrilla group last month, had been released.

Luis Díaz's father, who was abducted by the Colombian guerrilla group, has been set free.
Luis Manuel Díaz and his wife, Cilenis Marulanda, were taken captive by armed individuals from the National Liberation Army (ELN) while at a gas station in Barrancas, their hometown in northern Colombia, on October 28.
Marulanda was rescued later in the day, but an extensive search operation by the police and military was still in progress to locate Díaz Sr.
Eventually, on Thursday, just before the start of the match in Toulouse, Díaz Sr. was finally delivered to the United Nations and Catholic Church representatives in Valledupar, Colombia.
"Luis Díaz, also known as Lucho, is exuding immense happiness, always sporting a thumbs-up sign. It is undoubtedly a positive sight. In fact, it looks remarkably good," Klopp enthusiastically told TNT Sports in anticipation of the upcoming match.
"In terms of timing, it couldn't have been more opportune. If it's happening today, then it's fantastic. That's the only thing I can confidently state."
When asked about his decision to start DÃaz against Toulouse, Klopp said: "We asked him, he wants to [play] and he will."
