Summary
Big Mouth is a hilarious and relatable animated series that explores the wild and messy world of puberty through the eyes of middle schoolers.
The show's diverse and inclusive cast challenges expectations and fearlessly explores taboo subjects, establishing its position as one of the most inclusive shows on television. The voice cast is comprised of highly skilled actors, including Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, Maya Rudolph, and many others, who brilliantly give life to the characters with their comedic talent.
As the penultimate season of Big Mouth returns to Netflix, both new viewers and long-time fans may be curious about the latest members of the voice cast and characters. Created by Nick Kroll, Adam Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett, this popular animated series revolves around a group of middle schoolers and explores the highs and lows of growing up. With a mix of horror, excitement, and shock, the preteens navigate through awkward and raunchy situations, all while maintaining relatability and humor.
What sets Big Mouth apart is its surrealistic approach to depicting the chaotic and messy teenage mind during puberty. Starting with its early episodes, the show focuses on best friends Nick Birch (voiced by Kroll) and Andrew Glouberman (voiced by John Mulaney) as they navigate their first sexual experiences and other typical pubescent milestones. Along the way, they are accompanied by their hormone monsters, who represent their brooding and often poorly timed sexual desires. While season 8 of Big Mouth will mark the series' final chapter, it will continue to inspire future raunchy coming-of-age comedies.
Big Mouth's Main Characters
Nick Kroll As Nick Birch & Maurice The Hormone Monster
Despite the show's ensemble approach, certain characters in Big Mouth play a more pivotal role in the series' narrative.
Nick Kroll, who is the co-creator of Big Mouth, voices the lead character Nick in the show. Nick, who is also known for his roles in The League and Kroll Show, has showcased his voice acting skills in movies like Sausage Party and Sing. In Big Mouth, Kroll takes on various roles including Nick, Maurice the Hormone Monster, and Coach Steve.
John Mulaney As Andrew Glouberman
Nick’s Jewish best friend, Andrew, faces continuous harassment from Maurice. Andrew is voiced by John Mulaney, a former Saturday Night Live writer and stand-up comedian. In addition to portraying Andrew, Mulaney also lends his voice to characters like Babe the Blue Ox, Detective Florez, Grandpa Andrew, and Mint. Mulaney is widely recognized for his roles in popular productions such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Documentary Now!, and The Bear.
Jessi Klein As Jessi Glaser
Jessi, the intelligent and spirited leading female character in Big Mouth, grapples with body insecurities. Renowned comedian Jessi Klein lends her voice to this dynamic role. Klein, known for her stellar contributions to Comedy Central, notably gained recognition for her work on Inside Amy Schumer.
Jenny Slate (Seasons 1–4) & Ayo Edebiri (Season 4–Present) As Missy Foreman-Greenwald
Jason Mantzoukas as Jay Bilzerian
is present above for reference.
Stand-up comedian Jenny Slate gained fame by creating Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, an internet sensation that eventually turned into a feature film. Apart from this, she also lent her voice to the character of Missy for the first four seasons of the popular show Big Mouth. However, following criticism for voicing a Black character, she decided to step down from the role. Starting from season 4, Ayo Edebiri, known for starring in The Bear, took over the role of Missy. Edebiri's talent extends beyond acting and includes writing, with credits in both TV and film such as Dickinson, Bottoms, and Theater Camp.
Jay Bilzerian, a bisexual teenager, wrestles with his desires and necessities. Portrayed by the versatile Jason Mantzoukas, known for his roles in numerous acclaimed comedy series such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The League, and The Good Place. Additionally, Mantzoukas graces the silver screen as part of the cast for John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum.
Fred Armisen as Elliot Birch
Although Nick’s father Elliot is kind and well-intentioned, Fred Armisen, best known for his work on Saturday Night Live and Portlandia, is the perfect fit for portraying him. Armisen frequently appears in guest spots, ranging from Los Espookys to Broad City, adding his unique touch to the role.
Maya Rudolph as Connie the Hormone Monstress
Connie the Hormone Monstress appears in Big Mouth whenever significant events occur in the lives of the show's young female characters. The role is voiced by Maya Rudolph, a former member of SNL's cast and a prominent figure in the critically acclaimed film Bridesmaids, which received an Oscar nomination. In addition to portraying Connie, Rudolph also lends her voice to other characters on Big Mouth such as Diane Birch, the Ghost of Elizabeth Taylor, and the Ghost of Whitney Houston.
Jordan Peele as the Ghost of Duke Ellington
Simply known as “Duke,” this Big Mouth character is trapped between heaven and hell, and remains at his location of death: Nick’s home. After gaining widespread recognition through his sketch series Key & Peele, the actor-turned-filmmaker solidified his position as the go-to director in the horror genre with acclaimed films such as Get Out, Us, and Nope.

Editor's P/S
As a Gen Z fan, I have a few thoughts on the voice cast of Big Mouth. First, I think it's great that the show has such a diverse and inclusive cast. It's important to have shows that represent different voices and experiences, and Big Mouth does a great job of that.
Second, I think the voice cast is incredibly talented. The actors all bring their own unique energy to the characters, and they really make the show come to life. I especially love Nick Kroll's performance as Nick Birch. He perfectly captures the awkwardness and insecurity of being a teenager.
Overall, I think the voice cast of Big Mouth is one of the best things about the show. They bring the characters to life and make the show relatable and funny. I can't wait to see what they do in the final season.
