NCSoft, the developer of the MMORPG City of Heroes, has given its fans permission to run a revived version of the game on a private server, named Homecoming.
The Homecoming team expressed their gratitude for the support and patience of the fans over the years, and announced that NCSoft has officially granted Homecoming the license to host City of Heroes.
The Homecoming team has guaranteed the safety of players' accounts and characters, and confirmed that they will continue to develop new content. Furthermore, the game will remain free and funded solely through donations.
Homecoming creators will not have to pay upfront or recurring license fees but will set higher donation targets to save in case of emergencies. Despite NCSoft's approval of Homecoming, the developer can still request the shutdown of the private server at any time. In addition, development will remain closed-source rather than open-source.
City of Heroes, originally launched on PC in 2004 and ceased its service in 2012. However, in 2019, the source code became available, sparking renewed interest as players began hosting the game independently of NCSoft's direct involvement.
According to our website's review of City of Heroes, we described it as "a refreshingly focused online role-playing experience that is both entertaining and polished. Unlike many others, it successfully delivers on the promise of an excellent concept."

As a hard fan of City of Heroes, I am thrilled beyond words to see the game resurrected with the blessing of its original developers. The news of Homecoming's official license from NCSoft is a dream come true, and I can't wait to relive the heroic adventures that made City of Heroes so special. The dedication and passion of the Homecoming team are truly inspiring, and I am confident that they will continue to develop new content that will keep the game fresh and exciting for years to come.
The fact that the game will remain free and funded solely through donations is a testament to the generosity and commitment of the City of Heroes community. I am more than happy to contribute to the game's continued success and ensure that future generations of gamers can experience the joy and excitement of City of Heroes. While the possibility of NCSoft requesting the shutdown of the private server remains a concern, I am hopeful that the positive relationship between Homecoming and NCSoft will continue to grow and strengthen, allowing City of Heroes to thrive for many years to come.
