Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines, stars of Fixer Upper, understand the importance of stepping back from their busy design business. During a recent episode of Today on Wednesday, May 29, Chip, 49, mentioned that sometimes it feels like they are constantly running marathons with one after another. He explained that in theory, after finishing a marathon, you would take a break to recover. However, in the race of life, it's not always clear where the starting line or finish line is, making it challenging to know when to take a break. Despite this uncertainty, Chip and Joanna, 46, have made a conscious effort to seize opportunities to pause and recharge.
Joanna mentioned that the couple's breaks can vary from "a weekend of doing nothing" to intentionally deciding to take a break.
During an interview with hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, Joanna explained, "In some ways, it's more like a season where we're still working but also saying yes to other things. I believe that this is the natural progression of Fixer Upper that we have enjoyed. It began that way and has transformed into something simpler that suits our family better. It's about embracing change and evolution."
Chip and Joanna rose to fame as DIY experts when their show Fixer Upper debuted on HGTV in 2013, where they shared their home renovation projects in Waco, Texas. After five successful seasons, the couple decided to take a break from the show and the network.
In 2021, Chip and Joanna, who have five children, made a comeback to their Fixer Upper roots by releasing new episodes on Max through their Magnolia network. They have also been featured in renovation spinoffs such as Fixer Upper: The Castle, Fixer Upper: The Hotel, and Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse. This year also marks the special 10th anniversary of the first season of Fixer Upper.
After watching the couple's 2012 audition tape, Chip jokingly remarked, "I feel like we look like babies. Now we feel like, 'Wow, 10 years?' It's certainly created quite the evolution on my face."
As they reflect on the passage of time, Chip and Joanna are already anticipating their next milestones.
Chip expressed his excitement about turning 50 this year and celebrating his 21st anniversary with Joanna. He mentioned feeling like they have grown up together over the years. Looking ahead to the next decade, Chip humorously remarked that he will soon be a 60-year-old man and a grandfather, inspired by the legendary Larry King. Chip envisioned himself as a mix of a grandparent and a youthful figure, much like Larry King. He looks forward to seeing what the future holds in the next 10 years.
Chip and Joanna are proud parents to Drake, 19, Ella Rose, 17, Duke, 16, Emmie Kay, 15, and Crew, 5. Drake has completed his second year at Baylor University, while Crew is gearing up to start kindergarten in the upcoming fall.
