Police in Romeoville, Illinois, are conducting an investigation following the tragic discovery of a family of four, including two children, and their three dogs, all found deceased in their residence on Sunday evening. The individuals and canines were discovered with gunshot wounds, inflicting immense sorrow upon this tranquil community located approximately 30 miles outside of Chicago.
During a news conference on Monday, Deputy Chief Chris Burne of the Romeoville Police Department stated that the deaths are being investigated as a murder, rather than a murder-suicide. The adult victims have been identified as Alberto Rolon, 38, and Zoraida Bartolomei, 32, while the two children were boys, as confirmed by the Will County Coroners Office.
Officers were called to conduct a welfare check at the residence on Concord Avenue in the 500 block, as a family member failed to report to work on Sunday and relatives' attempts to contact them went unanswered, raising concerns. According to authorities, it is suspected that the shooting occurred between 9 p.m. on Saturday and 5 a.m. on Sunday.
"We do not request anyone to shelter in place. Although we are not actively searching for anyone in the vicinity, we consistently remind our residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity they may witness," stated Burne.
On Monday, the area was cordoned off with police tape, and footage from WBBM, a CNN affiliate, depicted police officers removing items from the residence and loading them into a police van.
Carol Love, a neighbor residing next door, informed WBBM that she was present at her residence during the specified period mentioned by the police; however, she did not perceive any sounds or disturbances.
Expressing his concerns, Dan Lugo, another resident in the vicinity, conveyed to WBBM, "I am curious about the situation, you know. The atmosphere is extremely serene, almost eerily still. These kind of incidents are unheard of in this area. It's truly unsettling. I believe the entire neighborhood is shaken by this."
According to a statement by district superintendent Rachel Kinder, the tragic deaths of the two children occurred while they were attending R.C. Hill Elementary School. Kinder referred to the incident as a "senseless act of gun violence" and acknowledged that it would undoubtedly evoke a range of emotions, concerns, and inquiries within the school community.
The school is offering mental health and counseling resources to its families, according to the message.
