Chelsea have finalized the acquisition of midfielder Romeo Lavia from Southampton in a transfer that amounts to £58m. The agreement entails an initial payment of £53m and an additional £5m in add-ons. The 19-year-old has put pen to paper on a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea's preferred midfield trio for this season is expected to consist of Lavia, Enzo Fernandez, and Moises Caicedo. This combination has already been nicknamed the 'LFC midfield' by Chelsea fans, in light of Liverpool's unsuccessful attempts to secure signings of both Lavia and Caicedo during the summer transfer window. Lavia expressed his joy on joining Chelsea and being a part of their thrilling project, emphasizing the club's remarkable football legacy and his eagerness to commence his journey with them.

I'm excited to meet my new teammates and work together to create a strong bond that will help us achieve remarkable success.

Chelsea's co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, expressed their delight in welcoming Romeo to the club. They recognized his talent from his performances in the Premier League while at Southampton last season, where he exhibited maturity beyond his years. Romeo's progress has been closely observed by Chelsea for quite some time.

"We believe he is ready to make an impact at Chelsea throughout the current campaign, and in the coming years."

Chelsea edge Liverpool again in transfer market

Chelsea outmaneuvered Liverpool in securing the signing of Lavia, following the Reds' agreement with Southampton. According to sources, the overall deal between Liverpool and Southampton amounted to £60m. Despite this, the Belgian midfielder unequivocally communicated his desire to join Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool lost out on signing Caicedo to Chelsea as the Brighton midfielder made a British record move to Stamford Bridge for £115m. Despite having a £111m offer accepted by Brighton, the 21-year-old made it clear that he had no intention of joining Liverpool. Lavia, on the other hand, began his career at Anderlecht in Belgium and later joined Manchester City at the age of 16 after spending eight years at the club.

He played his first match at the Etihad Stadium in September 2021, starting in the EFL Cup against Wycombe Wanderers and securing a 6-1 victory. Following this, the midfielder made one more appearance for City before transferring to Southampton the previous summer. During his time at Southampton, Lavia made 34 appearances, unfortunately, their season concluded with relegation at St Mary's.
