Captain Sandy, Natalya Scudder, Tumi Mhlongo. Bravo (3)
Captain Sandy is now informed about the ongoing drama between Tumi Mhlongo and Natalya Scudder, but she has no intention of resolving the issue for them. In the latest episode of Below Deck Mediterranean that aired on October 16, Tumi and Natalya's problems continued to intensify. Before Sandy was made aware of the situation, Natalya confided in Kyle Viljoen about her recent outburst directed at Tumi.
"I thoroughly enjoy indulging in some good gossip. However, I have come to realize that my involvement in such matters only exacerbates the situation. I made the mistake of confiding in Tumi about my encounters with Natalya during season 7. To my surprise, Tumi responded by expressing her belief that Natalya needs to focus on her own responsibilities. Furthermore, Tumi cautioned that if she were to lose her composure, it could result in her storming off due to a diva-like moment," explained Kyle, who had informed Natalya that Tumi claimed she would terminate her employment. "Although I excel at gathering information, my downfall lies in my inability to keep it to myself. It's certainly not ideal, and I am fully aware of the negative consequences it can bring."
In the meantime, Sandy became aware of the tension between Tumi and Natalya through her own conversation with the head stewardess.
“It’s nothing you need to be concerned about,” Tumi reassured Sandy. “I am a little worried because when it comes to managing Natalya, it feels like there is constant resistance. It's as if I joined the team and she instantly disliked me, not wanting me around. Honestly Sandy, that's the exact sentiment I got.”

The captain opted not to directly address the conflict with her employees. "I'm going to leave it to you to handle it. If you require assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to me. However, I advise you to approach the situation with kindness rather than authority," Sandy informed Tumi. "If things don't improve, feel free to approach me and I will have a conversation with her."
Sandy proceeded to provide Tumi with an understanding of Natalya's potential emotions.
“There is a distinct shift in how people perceive you when you go from being the second stew to the chief,” she observed. “Being in a leadership position means you won't always be well-liked. Not everyone has a positive relationship with their boss. It takes time for everyone to adjust and learn how to work together. They just need to push through this initial discomfort. If it escalates into a bigger problem, I will intervene.”
The tension between the stews intensified when Tumi joined the boat in season 8. She didn't come on board until the second charter, which initially made Natalya the chief stew. However, Natalya's attempt to pass on the role to Tumi immediately created a division among the coworkers.
Sandy had to intervene during Monday's episode when Tumi and Natalya engaged in a heated argument.
"Firstly, I want to express my gratitude for your efforts. However, I cannot tolerate this situation," Sandy conveyed to Natalya, who then explained, "I provided a thorough handover, but she immediately began finding faults and secretly messaging Kyle."
Tumi attempted to present her perspective, which began with her mocking Natalya's remarks. Sandy, on the other hand, was unimpressed with the situation.
"That behavior is unacceptable. Making fun of others in my presence is not tolerated," Sandy stated. "As a leader, you must rise above this and find a resolution, otherwise I am prepared to remove both of you from this team."
Sandy explained her management approach on camera, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect in the workplace. She clarified that certain behaviors are unacceptable and need to be addressed, but it is also necessary to allow leaders to handle the situation. She mentioned the significance of not drawing the line for others, as it can hinder their ability to respect each other. However, Sandy acknowledged that if she continues to hear Natalya screaming at Tumi without resolution, she would be obliged to intervene and make a decision.
Later in the episode, Tumi acknowledged that her "unprofessional" text had contributed to the tension. She recognized that her words had been distorted by the time they reached Natalya.
"I have never encountered someone who lies like this. She claimed that I told you that I am not afraid to dismiss her. That is not what I said. What information did you provide her regarding the text?" the former Below Deck Down Under cast member inquired of Kyle. "I never stated that I have no issue with firing her. That is not within my responsibilities. Am I the Captain? How can I terminate your employment? Furthermore, I am uncertain whether it is her or Kyle. I am unsure of the origin of these allegations. It is truly frustrating."
Ultimately, Sandy held separate meetings with Tumi and Natalya to provide them with guidance. She advised Tumi to "persevere" in her role as the leader of the interior team. Meanwhile, Sandy emphasized to Natalya the importance of "communication" in the workplace.
Tumi and Natalya's initial conversation following their intense argument didn't conclude on a positive note. Concurrently, Sandy was facing challenges with her deck team, as they were unable to execute a smooth docking.
"This situation is far from ideal. Absolutely unacceptable," Sandy expressed to the cameras. "Given that we have a complete team onboard for our debut charter, one would expect things to run more smoothly. Unfortunately, that is not the case here."
Below Deck Mediterranean airs on Bravo Mondays at 9 p.m. ET.
