Since their introduction in Season 4, Jouno Saigiku has consistently appeared as a dubious character, with instances of torture, torment, and overall unsettling behavior. However, in the world of Bungo Stray Dogs, even the most detestable individuals have the potential for acts of goodness. This reminder holds immense value, especially when faced with a multitude of character casualties.

The Calm Before The Storm

Fukuchi unleashed the power of Bram Stoker's ability last week, resulting in its rapid spread worldwide. This caused a drastic transformation of the world's military forces, turning them into loyal thralls under Bram's command. The UN was left with no choice but to take action in response. When Tachihara discovered Fukuchi's deceit, he confronted him directly. However, despite his best efforts, Tachihara was no match for the time-bending power of the Amenogozen and ended up being defeated, unable to escape the fate of becoming a vampire himself.

The past four episodes have undeniably been overwhelming, and although the narrative will continue at an intense pace, it brought a sense of relief to witness a familiar backdrop. Edgar Allan Poe skillfully utilizes his power to recreate the headquarters of the Armed Detective Agency, clarifying the enigmatic scenes from the previews where the characters were unexpectedly situated back in the office, despite being relentlessly pursued.

Lucy and Poe have been instrumental in leading the home team this season, thanks to their extraordinary powers. Without the two allies, who possess unique abilities to create subspaces, the team would have likely faced perilous situations long ago. By starting from the "office," there is a touch of nostalgia for simpler times, as well as the added advantage of embarking on a fresh start before undertaking their "final mission" to restore the agency's reputation.

Since the beginning of the Decay of Angels saga, Bungo's worldbuilding has expanded beyond the borders of Japan. However, the pacing at which this lore is presented is not ideal. The inclusion of names like "Standard Island" or the "Master of Gifted Warfare" (presumably Agatha Christie) can be thrilling for readers of novels. However, some of the concepts feel overly ambitious.

In last week's review, we compared Bram's debut to a Pandora's Box, and that comparison was not unfounded. Fukuzawa mentions Bram as one of the "ten tragedies that once destroyed humanity," but there is limited explanation about what that actually means. Now, the fate of the narrative relies on yet another plot device, the "One Order." This tool has the ability to control the minds of entire militaries and is part of a trio of "Great Calamities."

While these ideas definitely have potential, the concern arises from their rapid introduction at this stage. After five seasons, fans are still left questioning the origins of the "Great War." Yet, what truly matters is the profound impact the war had on both the world and its characters. This intricate lore was gradually unraveled over the course of multiple seasons. Conversely, Bram and the One Order directly influence the current storyline, making it crucial for the storytellers to seamlessly integrate these concepts.

On a brighter side, Fukuchi's plan is undeniably one of the more innovative approaches to achieving global dominance. The narrative demonstrates a certain level of self-awareness as Ranpo acknowledges the villains' ultimate objective as "overused and unoriginal," yet it is a testament to the skillful storytelling that it manages to avoid feeling trite. This can be attributed to Bungo's inherent distinctiveness; its ability to fully embrace a blend of captivating narrative techniques that are deeply rooted in its literary and cinematic influences.

Jouno Saigiku: Becoming Not Quite As Terrible

The source material often leaves manga readers feeling unsatisfied due to its omission of small scenes and details, although these seemingly inconsequential elements can accumulate and impact the overall experience. It is not uncommon for one to question whether the Hunting Dogs are more captivating in manga form. However, the exceptional performances by the voice actors and the masterful direction have undeniably left a lasting impression.

Teruko, an angry gremlin, masks her true nature as she sees herself not as superior, but as a servant of society and its harmony. Tetchou, though appearing cold and vicious, is actually honorable and trustworthy, particularly evidenced by his promise to the owner of Café Uzumaki. However, the presence of Jouno adds a different dynamic.

Jouno possesses remarkable intelligence and perception, which unfortunately manifests in his enjoyment of inflicting pain during interrogations. This stark contrast between him and Tetchou contributes to the complexity of the entire Hunting Dogs group. They are perceived as the "good guys" solely because they oppose the labeled "terrorists." As the audience is aware of the Agency's innocence, the darker aspects of the Hunting Dogs become more magnified.

Excluding Fukuchi, who has already been exposed as the primary antagonist, Jouno emerges as the most morally reprehensible member within the group, rendering him the perfect candidate for betrayal. Consequently, Jouno extends an offer to join the Decay of Angels, leading to an unexpected outcome: the plan backfires. Not due to Jouno's transformation into a virtuous individual, but rather because he turns out to be slightly less malevolent than anticipated.

He takes pleasure in inflicting torment upon others, under the belief that they are criminals and therefore deserving of it. However, contrary to Fukuchi's suspicions, Jouno finds more satisfaction in safeguarding people. This doesn't necessarily make Jouno a virtuous individual, nor is it a requirement, but it is poetically brilliant how Fukuchi unwittingly turned his potential partner-in-crime into a hero.

Interestingly, for the third consecutive week, a character has come to the realization of Fukuchi's true identity, confronted him, and ultimately failed. Nonetheless, on each occasion, the dynamics have undergone significant changes. The relationship between the competitors, their level of familiarity, and the precautions taken, if any, to counter the Amenogozen have all differed. Although these encounters are brief, they are exceptionally satisfying and demonstrate the meticulous planning that went into them.

Despite Fukuchi's unbeatable record of 3-0, there are enough flaws in his carefully constructed scheme that a vulnerability is bound to emerge. The key lies in uncovering it, even if it means enduring multiple disappointments along the way. The ultimate success will depend on Ranpo's foresight and whether his plan accounts for the element of time travel.

Furthermore, this particular episode holds great significance as it marks the initial occurrence this season where sufficient time was allotted for a captivating ending title sequence, which, as anticipated, turned out to be stunning in its visual presentation. Additionally, the reappearance of Aya Koda, the secondary character introduced in the OVA's 25th episode titled "Walking Alone," adds an intriguing aspect to the unfolding chaos and leaves us curious about the role she will assume.

The upcoming episodes of Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 are anticipated to take place primarily at the airport. The Agency, along with the two remaining Hunting Dogs and the Decay of Angels, will engage in intense battles. Additionally, viewers can anticipate a thrilling prison break from Mersault. This latest episode adds to the series' consistent quality, yet it is also alarming to consider that by the conclusion of this season, the anime will have reached the same point as the manga. The implications for Season 6 remain uncertain.
