LeBron “Bronny” James Jr., who experienced cardiac arrest earlier this year, continues to be sidelined for the University of Southern California’s forthcoming basketball season.
USC coach Andy Enfield confirmed on Monday, September 25, that LeBron James’ 18-year-old son, Bronny, did not attend the team's initial practice for the season. Enfield informed reporters, "Bronny’s progress is looking good, but we are unable to provide any medical updates. He is attending classes and performing exceptionally well academically, which makes us very proud."
Enfield, aged 54, further stated that Bronny is present as much as possible and is utilizing his recovery time to focus on his schoolwork. He added, "His grades are currently outstanding, and he exemplifies the role of a dedicated student-athlete."
Enfield expressed his belief that Bronny will be a valuable asset to the basketball team until he returns to the court. He emphasized Bronny's strong teammate qualities, stating that he genuinely cares about winning and has a close bond with his fellow players. Enfield also mentioned that Bronny's presence on the court is contagious and evident within a few minutes of observation.
One of Bronny's teammates, DJ Rodman, who is the son of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, described Bronny as a positive individual. According to DJ, every encounter with Bronny is greeted with a big smile and a friendly greeting.
DJ, aged 22, expressed a sense of relief that Bronny's health scare turned out to be less severe than anticipated, especially considering that two of his friends had previously experienced cardiac arrest. DJ admitted that while it wasn't traumatizing, it did have a significant impact on him, forcing him to abruptly leave the gym. "I couldn't bear to witness another incident like that," DJ admitted.
In July, Bronny was admitted to the hospital after experiencing cardiac arrest during a USC basketball workout. According to a spokesperson for the James family, Bronny's condition has since stabilized, and he is no longer in the intensive care unit.
LeBron, aged 38, expressed his gratitude to fans for "offering their love and prayers to my family" via X (formerly known as Twitter) on July 27. "We deeply appreciate your support," he stated. Later that day, Bronny was released from the hospital. (LeBron is also a proud parent to his 16-year-old son, Bryce, and 8-year-old daughter, Zhuri, whom he shares with his wife, Savannah James.)
Bronny James, along with LeBron James, Zhuri James, and Bryce James, have frequently been seen together in public events. Some of these include enjoying meals together and attending a concert by Drake in Los Angeles.
Last month, the James family disclosed that Bronny’s cardiac arrest was a result of a "significant Congenital Heart Defect that can be treated both anatomically and functionally." Shortly after, Enfield expressed optimism about Bronny's potential return to the court, stating that he and the USC team will proceed patiently and take gradual steps towards his recovery.
