The team working on Bridgerton is excited to bring more LGBTQIA+ representation to the screen. Jess Brownell, the showrunner who replaced creator Chris Van Dusen, shared insights on what fans can look forward to in future episodes.
“This show celebrates love in all its forms, and I believe it’s important to highlight queer love and share queer stories,” Brownell expressed in an interview with Pride on April 18. “I hope to showcase more queer happiness on screen, which was a top priority for me when I took on the role of showrunner.”
Brownell did not give away any hints about which characters may explore their sexualities further, stating, “I can't reveal exactly how things will unfold this season and in the upcoming ones, but I am looking forward to fans experiencing it.”
Meanwhile, season 3 lead Nicola Coughlan showed her support for more onscreen representation.

Sam Clemmett and Freddie Dennis are joining the cast of Bridgerton on Netflix.
"I'm really excited for it. I can't wait. I believe it will be absolutely beautiful," said Coughlan, who portrays Penelope Featherington. "What's great about Bridgerton is that it's a made-up world that has never actually existed. It's set in Regency London where we get to wear all these vibrant colors, it's incredibly diverse, and there's even glitter eyeshadow. This creates a perfect opportunity for queer love stories to be told, because all love stories deserve to be celebrated."
Coughlan expressed his hope for a prominent queer love story to be included in the show in the future.
Bridgerton, a Netflix series that debuted in 2020, is based on Julia Quinn's novels of the same title. The show has mainly stuck to the storylines found in the book series. However, in the Queen Charlotte spinoff that premiered in 2023, fans were introduced to LGBTQIA+ characters in a more prominent way through Brimsley (Sam Clemmett) and Reynolds (Freddie Dennis).
Executive producer Shonda Rhimes has hinted that the writers of Bridgerton may deviate from the books. In season 3, the order was changed with Colin Bridgerton taking the lead instead of Benedict.
Rhimes revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in March 2022 that there are eight Bridgerton siblings and eight books. The plan is to showcase each sibling's romantic journey, but not necessarily in chronological order. Each sibling will have their own story told.
Brownell explained the reason behind delaying Benedict's story to Variety in May 2022. He mentioned that the show strays slightly from the books as it is more of an ensemble show. While the books concentrate on one romantic pair at a time, the show gives more focus to multiple characters with the siblings only making brief appearances.
The first part of Bridgerton season 3 will be available on Netflix starting Thursday, May 16. The rest of the episodes will be released on Thursday, June 13.
