Bret Robbins made his first appearance in the video game industry in 1996, working as an Assistant Lead Tester for the PS1 platformer Pandemonium! developed by Toys for Bob. This studio is now renowned for the recent Crash Bandicoot games. Robbins then continued his career as a tester, contributing to the first Legacy of Kain game in the same year. Afterwards, Robbins transitioned into a Designer role, starting with the humorous action-platformer Gex: Enter the Gecko. This game, alongside the other two in the PS1 Gex trilogy, is set to receive a Limited Run remaster.
By the early 2000s, Bret Robbins had built an impressive resume and secured a Lead Designer position for the beloved Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King game, developed by EA Redwood Shores (eventually known as Visceral Games). At Redwood Shores, Robbins also served as a Lead Designer for the 007: From Russia With Love game, which notably featured Sean Connery's final portrayal of the iconic role. Robbins then took a significant leap in his career by becoming the Creative Director for Dead Space in 2008.
Following the release of Dead Space, Robbins joined a group of EA Redwood developers who decided to form their own studio, Sledgehammer Games. Leveraging the success of Dead Space, Sledgehammer Games approached Activision to collaborate on a new third-person Call of Duty game. Activision accepted the offer, making Robbins the Creative Director of Sledgehammer Games. While the third-person Call of Duty project was put on hold, Robbins worked on multiple Call of Duty titles, including Modern Warfare 3, Advanced Warfare, and Call of Duty: WW2.
Robbins has built an impressive career and it continues to flourish. In March 2019, he announced his departure from Sledgehammer Games and his plans to establish Ascendant Studios, where he serves as the founder and CEO. Under Robbins' leadership, Ascendant Studios shows great promise, especially with the upcoming game Immortals of Aveum.
Immortals of Aveum launches on August 22, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
