The Marvels, the latest MCU release, has officially become the lowest-grossing movie in the superhero film franchise. After one month in theaters, it is struggling to even make back its budget at the box office. Despite the continued production of MCU content, the number of avid fans visiting theaters to enjoy each new installment has been rapidly declining.
Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home were huge box office successes, but the Marvel franchise has hit a rough patch in 2023. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania disappointed at the box office, and The Marvels is now the lowest-grossing MCU movie to date.
As reported by Variety, The film has only managed to earn $80 million in North America and $197 million globally during its month-long tenure in theatres.
The Marvels fails to perform at the box office
Although this amount is not insignificant, it is significantly less than the billions of dollars raised by other projects. This is especially true when you take into account the $220 million budget for the movie.
The initial Captain Marvel film was able to generate more than $1 billion at the box office. This could indicate a major change for the MCU. Disney CEO Bob Iger has expressed a desire to prioritize "quality" over "quantity" in the company's content strategy.
As a result, fans should anticipate a decrease in Marvel content in the near future. In 2024, only Deadpool 3 is set to be released, marking the first time in MCU history that only one Marvel film is scheduled for a year.

As a Gen Z netizen, I have mixed feelings about the Marvels being declared the MCU's lowest-grossing film to date. On the one hand, I'm disappointed that the film didn't perform as well as expected at the box office. I'm a big fan of the MCU, and I was looking forward to seeing The Marvels. I was excited about the film's potential to explore the cosmic side of the MCU and introduce new characters like Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau.
On the other hand, I'm not surprised that The Marvels didn't do as well as other MCU films. The film received mixed reviews from critics, and it didn't seem to generate as much buzz as other MCU films. Additionally, the MCU has been releasing a lot of content in recent years, and it's possible that audiences are starting to get fatigued. I think it's important for the MCU to take a step back and focus on quality over quantity. I'm hoping that the upcoming films in the MCU will be more successful than The Marvels.
