The specific charges in the extortion case to which he will plead guilty and the related sentence are unclear. However, Kelly confirmed to CNN that van der Sloot has the intention to plead guilty in connection with the case.

As a prerequisite for the plea deal, van der Sloot must disclose the details of Holloway's cause of death and the manner in which her body was disposed, Kelly informed NBC's "Today" show.

"Kelly announced on "Today" that there will be no additional investigation or search for Natalee's remains."

"After the hearing, Natalee's mother, Beth Holloway, will hold a press conference to disclose the information provided by van der Sloot to FBI authorities."

CNN has sought more information from Kelly and as well as comment from the US Justice Department and police in Aruba.

18 years of mystery and misery

In 2005, Natalee Holloway disappeared during her high school graduation trip in the Caribbean nation. At that time, the 18-year-old was spotted leaving a nightclub accompanied by van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers, Satish and Deepak.

In 2005, the three men were initially arrested but were subsequently released due to lack of sufficient evidence. However, they faced rearrest and were charged in 2007 by Aruban prosecutors for their alleged involvement in the voluntary manslaughter of Natalee Holloway or causing serious bodily harm to her, ultimately leading to her death.

However, several weeks later, a judge in Aruba ordered the release of van der Sloot, stating that there was not enough direct evidence to prove that Holloway died as a result of a violent crime or that van der Sloot was connected to any criminal activity. Similarly, the Kalpoe brothers were also released. The lawyers representing the men have consistently claimed their innocence throughout the entirety of the investigation.

Holloways body has never been found. In 2012, an Alabama judge signed an order declaring her legally dead.

Why van der Sloot faces charges in the US

US officials have no authority over the criminal investigation in Aruba. However, van der Sloot was indicted by a federal grand jury in Alabama for an alleged plot to sell information about Holloway's remains to her family in exchange for $250,000. The scheme, as stated in the indictment, occurred between March and May 2010. In June 2010, van der Sloot was charged with extortion and wire fraud.

In the weeks between the alleged extortion and indictment, van der Sloot killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores at his hotel room in Peru on May 30, 2010.

Van der Sloot admitted to murdering Flores and received a 28-year prison sentence in Peru. However, in June, he was temporarily relocated to the US in order to confront charges of extortion and fraud, based on an agreement between Peru and the US.

After concluding his legal proceedings in the United States, van der Sloot will return to Peru to complete his murder sentence in the Flores case. Following that, he will come back to the United States to commence serving any sentence he may receive for the federal charges.
