Palit, one of Nvidia's add-in-board partners, has started selling its RTX 4060 GPUs with a shorter PCIe interface. The official website lists three card models in the series, all featuring either a single or dual fan configuration with the shorter PCIe connector. The change was noticed by a Twitter user and while it may affect the GPU's structural support or cause slight sagging, there will be no impact on performance.
Nvidia introduced the RTX 4060 and RTX 4060Ti in May of this year, with the non-Ti version recently becoming available for purchase. The Founders Edition (FE) is priced at $299, while board partner cards from companies like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Zotac, and others are slightly more expensive. Similar to the FE card, the RTX 4060 models from these partners still feature a full-size 16X PCIe interface, despite the GPU only utilizing 8 lanes of the PCI Express bus. However, one of the board partners has taken a different approach with their RTX 4060 GPUs.
Palit, an Nvidia board partner with a long history of producing GPUs, has introduced a new lineup called RTX 4060. Notably, these cards come with a shorter PCIe interface, as observed by @fpsojisan_yt on Twitter. The official Palit website showcases three models: RTX 4060 Dual, Dual OC, and StormX. In terms of specifications, all three models are quite similar, although the Dual OC variant boasts a slightly higher boost clock of 2670MHz compared to the other two, which have 2460MHz. All of these cards are designed to fit in two PCIe slots, with the StormX model featuring a single fan design. Additionally, they all support an 8X PCIe interface.
While the performance remains unaffected, it is worth noting that a longer PCIe connector can provide better structural support and aid in preventing GPU sag. Therefore, it is uncertain how well the new design will withstand the test of time. However, users can opt for a third-party solution, like an anti-sag bracket, to address this issue. Moreover, the concern regarding structural support would be more significant if these GPUs had three fans or were thicker in a 3-slot design.
Other board partners are unlikely to switch to a shorter PCIe interface for their RTX 4060 cards. This is because it doesn't impact performance and would require changes to the manufacturing process. The board partner cards from Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, and other companies feature the standard 16X PCIe interface, but 8 of the lanes are not utilized.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 boasts 3072 cuda cores and 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM. It supports 4K at 240Hz or 8K at 60Hz with DSC. The card also features the latest 3rd generation Ray Tracing cores and 4th generation Tensor cores. While it is not as powerful or power-hungry as the RTX 4080 and 4090, it can still handle modern AAA titles at high settings, albeit at 1080p resolution. Priced at $299, it competes with the Radeon RX 7600, which offers similar or slightly better performance for $270 but lacks support for DLSS 3 performance enhancements.
