Daniela Ruah, an original star of NCIS: Los Angeles, has responded to the potential of returning to the franchise. Having been part of the NCIS spinoff since the very first season, Ruah played the character Kensi Blye. In the NCIS: LA series finale, it was revealed that Kensi and Marty Deeks (played by Eric Christian Olsen) are expecting a baby. However, with LL Cool J's Sam Hanna unexpectedly appearing in the season 2 finale of NCIS: Hawaiʻi, the door has been opened for other former NCIS: LA cast members to reprise their roles.
When asked about the possibility of returning to the NCIS franchise as Kensi in a comment to TVLine, Ruah expressed optimism. While there has been no confirmation, the veteran actress hinted that she would be willing to reprise her role given the right circumstances and if she is approached to do so. Below is Ruah's quote:
"The possibility of returning to the NCIS franchise as Kensi is something I would be open to, depending on the circumstances and if I am asked. Currently, nothing has been confirmed."
If I get asked, I will certainly figure it out at the time. If it makes sense, why not, right?”
Sam Hanna's Return Sets The Template For Kensi's Return
LL Cool J's cameo in the first half of the Hawaiʻi season 2 finale demonstrates how Kensi's integration into NCIS: Hawaiʻi or the original NCIS series can be successfully achieved. The finale primarily focuses on the rescue mission of Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant, played by Vanessa Lachey. Although Tennant was already making her escape from her captors, Hanna's well-timed sniper shot played a crucial role in ensuring her safe release. Going forward, Hanna will have recurring appearances in season 3 of NCIS: Hawaiʻi.
Hanna's appearance is casual, briefly referencing events from NCIS: LA. This suggests that Kensi's potential appearance wouldn't be burdensome or require a larger crossover. Kensi could make a multi-episode appearance with Deeks, assisting with a case and providing an update on their relationship.
It's important to mention that CBS didn't end NCIS: Los Angeles due to low ratings but rather due to the high costs of producing a long-running series. This implies that Kensi and other agents could still make appearances under the right circumstances. At the very least, Ruah seems open to returning in the future.
