The confirmation of Ryan Evans' sexuality in the High School Musical universe has confirmed what fans have always suspected. On Tuesday, July 25, Disney+ released a preview of the first few minutes of season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, showing a sneak peek of the fictional production of High School Musical 4. The original cast members, including Lucas Grabeel, Kaycee Stroh, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Alyson Reed, and Bart Johnson, play themselves in the show, reprising their roles from the beloved Disney franchise for a special reunion film.
Grabeel's character, Ryan, shares a passionate kiss with his husband, played by Scott Hoying, in the clip. This new character stands by Ryan's decision to return to his roots at East High School. Ryan's sexuality has been a source of speculation among fans since the original High School Musical movies aired from 2006 to 2008. In High School Musical 3, Ryan appeared to develop a romantic connection with Kelsi Nielsen, but some fans wondered if he had feelings for Chad Danforth after they exchanged outfits in the second film.
High School Musical director Kenny Ortega later revealed that he believes Ryan is gay.

In June 2020, the openly gay creator, Ortega, expressed that he incorporates a significant part of his identity into his work. He shared that Ryan's character in the series will come out while in college, as it is about embracing his authentic self rather than solely focusing on the act of coming out.
Ortega went on to explain why Ryan’s sexuality couldn’t be discussed when the musical film came out.
Lucas Grabeel, Kaycee Stroh, Monique Coleman, and Corbin Bleu are some of the actors involved in the production of Disney's High School Musical. According to a statement made by one of the actors, Disney is renowned for its progressive nature, but at the time, they were uncertain if the studio was prepared to explore more mature themes due to the family-friendly nature of the show.
The choreographer explained how they took it upon themselves to make choices that would resonate with the audience. They wanted people to see, feel, and connect with the performances. This approach had a significant impact, as thousands of kids have credited High School Musical for helping them feel comfortable in their own skin. The fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will debut on Disney+ on August 9.
