In 2023, Eyesheild 21, an American football manga, will be celebrating its 21st anniversary. To mark the occasion, illustrator Yuusuke Murata has organized a few special events. One of them includes the release of a new anime short, animated by Village Studio. Additionally, an exciting announcement has been made regarding Murata's upcoming projects.
Originally published from 2002 to 2009, the Eyeshield 21 manga consisted of 37 volumes. It was also adapted into an anime series, which aired from 2005 to 2008, featuring a total of 145 episodes. The story revolves around Sena Kobayakawa, an introverted boy who becomes the running back of the American football team after joining them as their secretary. The series gets its name from the eye shield Sena wears to disguise his identity, along with the number 21 on his jersey.
Murata shared a newly released video on his Twitter account on August 16th, allowing anyone to watch it for free. Although the video is only 43 seconds long, it is directed by Murata himself. Previously, a silent version of the clip was posted on June 5th as a teaser for the final version. The storyline of the clip was written by Riichirou Inagaki, the writer for Eyeshield 21.
In the clip, Sena is shown in an intense sprint down the football field, and there are also appearances by other characters from the Eyeshield 21 story. While there is no spoken dialogue in the short film as only Inagaki and Murata worked on it, there is written dialogue in Japanese. Although an official English transcript may be available in the future, the clip is worth watching even if you cannot read Japanese, as it is action-packed. One of the highlights is the updated and fresh animation style for the Eyeshield 21 characters!
The video also served as a major announcement for Yuusuke Murata's upcoming project, a one-shot manga entitled BRAIN x BRAVE. The manga is scheduled to be released on Shonen Jump+, although no further details have been revealed. This news is particularly thrilling for fans of Murata's previous works, such as Eyeshield 21 and One Punch Man. Additionally, Murata is currently involved in the production of the Zaiyuki anime and has mentioned that he has his own original animation project in the works. Clearly, he is quite occupied with various projects at the moment.
