During the Dengeki Bunko 30th Anniversary Event on July 15th, 2023, Kadokawa officially announced the commencement of production for the highly anticipated second season of the Sword Art Online spin-off series, Gun Gale Online.

The initial season of Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online was broadcasted from April 8th to June 30th, 2018. As a result, it has been five years since the debut of the first season of Gun Gale Online on our screens.

As previously mentioned, Gun Gale Online is a spin-off of the immensely popular Sword Art Online series. Similar to the main series, Gun Gale Online is also an anime adaptation of a light novel series bearing the same name. However, one distinction lies in the fact that the Sword Art Online light novels are authored by its original creator, Reki Kawahara, whereas Gun Gale Online is written by Reiichi Sigsawa. These light novels are published by Dengeki Bunko, a division of ASCII Media Works, which falls under the umbrella of Kadokawa Future Publishing.

The Gun Gale Online story centers around Kohiruimaki Karen, a college student who enjoys playing a virtual reality massively multiplayer online game (VRMMO) called Gun Gale Online. Within the game, Karen goes by the username Llenn and has gained notoriety as the Pink Devil, a nickname bestowed upon her by defeated adversaries due to her distinctive all-pink military attire and incredible speed and agility. As the first season progresses, Llenn rises to fame as a highly skilled player and emerges as one of Gun Gale Online's rising stars.

Accompanying this announcement is an official teaser image featuring the main character, Llenn, and a brief promotional video, which is available for viewing on Aniplex USA's official YouTube channel. Just like the first season, the second season of Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online will be produced by Studio 3Hz.

Additionally, the team behind the first season, including director Masayuki Sakoi, script supervisor Yosuke Kuroda, and voice actress Tomori Kusunoki reprising her role as Llenn, will also be working on the second season. Regrettably, there is currently no official release date announced. It is worth noting that the first season of Gun Gale Online was initially revealed at the Dengeki Bunko’s 2017 Fall Festival on October 1st, 2017. Approximately six months later, on April 8th, 2018, the first episode aired as part of the anime adaptation.

Given that the second season will be created by the same team, it is reasonable to anticipate a similar production timeline, resulting in a release date in Winter 2023. It is important to note that this is an educated estimate, and the official release date will be announced by the show runners in the coming months. Stay tuned for further updates. Additionally, the first season of Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is currently accessible for streaming on Crunchyroll.
