“Nothing is off the table. We don’t know. It’s all about the fans.”
Should The Expendables Franchise Continue?
While the Expendables franchise never received widespread critical acclaim, the original two films garnered significant praise from viewers. These movies not only showcased an exceptional ensemble cast, consisting of the greatest and most legendary action movie stars from the past four decades, but also delivered a plethora of intense and gory action sequences.
Despite having an impressive cast, The Expendables 3 was a disappointment due to its PG-13 rating, which removed a crucial element of the franchise's success. This led to it earning the lowest box office revenue among the films in the series and receiving a poor reception. As a result, it took a long time for a fourth movie to be developed. However, it is possible that the upcoming R-rated Expendables 4 will revive the franchise.
Although it is uncertain how the new movie will fare at the box office, the cast of The Expendables 4 alone makes the prospect of additional sequels exciting. Alongside franchise veterans like Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture, the upcoming sequel also introduces new characters played by 50 Cent, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Andy Garcia, among others. It remains to be seen how audiences will receive these new characters, but The Expendables 5 already has an impressive lineup of new and returning talent to move the franchise forward.
