Barbie is set to make her streaming debut this year, but fans will have to wait a bit longer. The highly-anticipated movie, directed and co-written by Greta Gerwig, tells the story of Barbie (played by Margot Robbie) as she starts to feel disconnected from her perfect life in Barbie Land and embarks on a journey to the real world, with Ken (played by Ryan Gosling) by her side, in search of her owner. Barbie enjoyed a successful opening weekend, earning $162 million at the domestic box office when it premiered on July 21, going head-to-head with Oppenheimer.
According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, the release of the Barbie movie will follow a more traditional pattern. Although an official date is yet to be announced, Zaslav revealed that the movie will have an extended theatrical run before becoming available on premium video-on-demand (VOD) platforms and eventually streaming on Max in the fall. Here is Zaslav's exact statement as reported by TheWrap:
We strongly believe in the power of the motion picture window. Let this movie make its way to the motion picture window, create a buzz, establish its brand, and then move on to PVOD. Let's traverse these tried-and-true economic avenues that have always worked, and in our opinion, work extremely well. And then, let's present it on Max. We have high hopes that its release on Max will have a significant impact, and this is expected to happen in the Fall.
More to come...
