After months of delays, AMD may finally release the drivers for its RDNA 3-based Radeon 700M iGPUs. While no specific release schedule has been shared by the company, mini-PC manufacturer Beelink has confirmed that AMD will distribute the drivers by the end of this month. The Radeon 700M iGPUs are part of the AMD Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APUs lineup, which is utilized in various mobile hardware such as handheld gaming devices, mini-PCs, and laptops.
The initial Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APUs were showcased at Computex in January of this year. These APUs offer a powerful CPU and an integrated GPU, based on AMD's latest RDNA 3 graphics architecture. Due to their compact size and impressive efficiency, these chips have been in high demand for various devices such as laptops, mini-PCs, and handheld gaming devices, which have gained popularity in recent times. However, a critical drawback of these APUs is the lack of graphics driver support, despite the devices being available for purchase for over a month.
Although AMD has not provided any official updates on this matter, Beelink, a manufacturer of mini-PCs, has shared a post on the Chinese microblogging platform, Weibo, shedding some light. According to Beelink, AMD plans to release the drivers by the end of this month, possibly within this week. They explain that the semiconductor manufacturer originally intended to release the driver on July 20th, but had to postpone it due to software compatibility issues. It is important to note that there is no official release date for the iGPU driver at this time.
Recently, Beelink introduced its new GTR7 and GTR7 Pro mini-PCs featuring powerful Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 7040 series CPUs and Radeon 780M GPUs based on the RDNA 3 architecture. In response to potential graphical performance issues caused by the lack of driver support, the company has extended the return period until July 31.
The Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APUs are equipped with Zen 4-based CPUs and RDNA 3-based iGPUs, offering support for LPDDR5x and PCIe 5. The lineup includes various models such as the Ryzen 5 PRO 7540U, 7640U, 7640HS, Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U, 7840HS, and the Ryzen 9 PRO 7940HS. The Ryzen 5 series features a 6-core 12-thread configuration with a TDP ranging from 15W to 28W, while the Ryzen 7 and 9 series feature an 8-core 16-thread configuration with a TDP ranging from 35W to 54W.
The Ryzen 7 7840HS and the Intel Core i7-13700H have comparable CPU performance in synthetic benchmarks. Additionally, the Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU has the capability to achieve frame rates similar to the desktop GTX 1060, allowing players to reach 60 FPS in AAA games with optimal settings. Furthermore, the inclusion of FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) and RSR (Radeon Super Resolution) support enhances overall performance.
