Five major movies have halted production due to the SAG-AFTRA actors strike, which officially commenced today. The strike was initiated by SAG-AFTRA after failed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). This strike coincides with the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, marking the first time actors and writers have simultaneously gone on strike since 1960.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, five prominent films, namely Deadpool 3, Venom 3, Gladiator 2, Lilo & Stitch, and an untitled F1 drama film starring Brad Pitt, have been confirmed to have ceased filming as a result of the SAG-AFTRA actors strike. While these are the only affected films confirmed thus far, it is expected that other productions will also be impacted as the strike persists.
Why Actors & Writers Are On Strike
Due to the ongoing strike by SAG-AFTRA actors, they are now prohibited from participating in the filming of scenes for upcoming movies and TV shows and from promoting these projects to the press. This is the reason why the cast of the Oppenheimer movie walked out of the London premiere, as promoting the film beyond the authorized strike period would violate the rules of the strike.
Although SAG-AFTRA and the WGA have separate contracts with the AMPTP, both organizations are advocating for similar issues. These issues include higher wages, residual payments for streaming content, and regulations regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creative productions. These demands aim to address the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry, which is increasingly reliant on streaming services and may incorporate AI technology.
The actor's strike will have a significant impact on numerous major productions that involve SAG-AFTRA actors. Without the dedicated effort and talent of actors, movies and shows would not be able to come to fruition. The decision to strike signifies the actors' response to the evolving landscape in Hollywood, demanding that the studios affiliated with the AMPTP address their concerns adequately. While the SAG-AFTRA strike may cause disruptions in various productions, they are viewed as temporary setbacks as actors and writers strive for equitable treatment and compensation.
