The incident took place near a cemetery where the late military commander Qasem Soleimani is laid to rest, according to reports from state media IRNA. The initial explosion occurred 700 meters from Soleimani's grave, followed by a second explosion a kilometer away, while visitors were paying their respects at the site.

Four years ago Wednesday, former President Donald Trump ordered a US airstrike at Baghdad International Airport that killed Soleimani. According to IRNA, the Deputy Governor for Political and Security stated that it is uncertain whether the "incident was caused by a gas explosion or a terrorist attack."

Videos posted on Iranian state media showed large crowds running in the area after the explosion.
