Summary
Chris Fisher wants Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to have longer seasons with up to 20 episodes per year.
He believes the show has great potential and could potentially run for 10 years.
The production has faced delays due to COVID and a strike, resulting in only 20 episodes being made in 4 years.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds co-executive producer and director, Chris Fisher, expressed his desire for the series to have 20 episodes per season. The highly-acclaimed season 2 of Strange New Worlds recently concluded with the episode "Hegemony," which marked the 10th episode of the season and the 20th episode overall for the series. This episode showcased Captain Christopher Pike and the USS Enterprise as they confronted the Gorn. Throughout season 2, Strange New Worlds successfully ventured into various genres, including legal drama, time travel romance, comedy, and even Star Trek's first-ever musical episode.
During an appearance on The 7th Rule podcast hosted by Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk, co-executive producer Chris Fisher discussed the season 2 finale of Strange New Worlds. Fisher contemplated how long the series could potentially continue, aligning with the wishes of numerous fans for each season to consist of more episodes. You can read Fisher's quote and watch the video of The 7th Rule below (Fisher's quote begins at the 59:09 time stamp).
I think the show has just begun. We haven't even scratched the surface. This has the potential to become a decade-long production. Those involved in the project are passionate about crafting it... Despite the setbacks caused by COVID and the strike, it has taken four years to create just 20 episodes. Therefore, let's hope that Paramount+ shows its shrewdness and decides, "Hey, let's produce 20 episodes annually. Let's kick-start this show. It's pure gold."
When Will Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Release?
Star Trek fans may have to wait much longer than expected for the highly anticipated season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Unfortunately, the production of the show, which was scheduled to begin in early May, was abruptly halted due to the ongoing strike by the Writer's Guild of America. This strike has now been going on for over 100 days, causing significant delays.
As if that wasn't enough, the actors represented by SAG-AFTRA also decided to join the strike in July. Their intention is to negotiate better terms with studios and streaming services, including Paramount+. However, this ongoing battle seems to have no end in sight, and the consequences for Strange New Worlds are becoming increasingly worrisome.
The more days that pass with the strikes unresolved, the dimmer the chances become for a 2024 release date for season 3 of Strange New Worlds. In fact, it's entirely possible that the season may be postponed until 2025. This news undoubtedly disappoints the devoted fans who have been eagerly awaiting the continuation of this thrilling series.
The delay of Strange New Worlds' return for Season 3 will be challenging for both fans and the creators. Season 2 left off on a cliffhanger, with Captain Pike facing a no-win situation against the Gorn. While Star Trek fans have dealt with cliffhanger waits in the past, the most famous one, "The Best of Both Worlds" from Star Trek: The Next Generation, only had a few months gap in 1990. The exact return date for Strange New Worlds Season 3 is unknown and will depend on the resolution of ongoing strikes. However, it's possible that after negotiations, Paramount+ will consider increasing the number of episodes in each season, solidifying Strange New Worlds as the flagship show of the Star Trek franchise. Currently, Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can be streamed on Paramount+.
