When it comes to wedding guest etiquette, one fashion faux pas should always be avoided: wearing white. Despite being traditionally reserved for the bride, some of Hollywood's biggest names have dared to break this rule, taking risks in the pursuit of style.
Instead of justifying and normalizing Hailey Bieber and Dua Lipa's bold fashion choices at recent weddings, let's appreciate their confidence and individuality. Hailey Bieber confidently wore a stunning backless white gown at Stephanie Shepherd and Larry Jack's wedding in June 2023. The floor-length gown showcased her incredible figure and was elegantly complemented by a turtleneck. Accompanied by her husband Justin Bieber, Hailey Bieber completed her look with a stylish blue handbag.
Similarly, Dua Lipa fearlessly donned a white ensemble at Simon Jacquemus and Marc Maestri's wedding in France in August 2022. The sheer snowy outfit, adorned with delicate flowers, created a whimsical and ethereal appearance for the "Levitating" songstress. It's worth noting that the outfit was personally designed by Jacquemus himself, adding an extra touch of exclusivity to Dua Lipa's fashion statement.
According to wedding etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, celebrities are usually forgiven for their fashion choices. However, there are a few exceptions when it comes to wearing white or ivory to a wedding. Gottsman explains that unless you are the bride, wearing these colors is considered inappropriate as it may give off the impression that you are seeking attention. The only exceptions to this rule are if the bride specifically requests her bridesmaids or guests to wear white, or if the wedding has an all-white theme, particularly if it is taking place at a beach.
Solange Knowles experienced this when she tied the knot with Alan Ferguson in November 2014. In a celebration of their union in New Orleans, all the guests, including her sister Beyoncé, wore white attire. (Solange and Ferguson ended their marriage in December 2020.)
Similarly, Cara Delevingne opted for a white ensemble when she attended her sister Poppy Delevingne's wedding to James Cook in May 2014. As a bridesmaid for the special occasion, the supermodel dazzled in a pearlesque dress featuring a ruffled hem.
If the bride hasn't explicitly authorized wearing white, Gottsman suggested opting for a different color. "Even if you want to wear white, avoid calling or asking the bride as it may make her feel uncomfortable," she stated.
Although it is uncertain whether Bieber obtained permission, let's assume she did. Continue scrolling to view her outfit and discover other celebrities who have worn white to weddings.

When it comes to wedding guest etiquette, there’s a fashion faux pas one should never commit: wearing white.

Although the angelic hue is traditionally reserved for the bride, several prominent Hollywood figures have defied this norm and taken a risk in the pursuit of style.
One such example is Hailey Bieber, the founder of Rhode, who attended the wedding of Stephanie Shepherd and record producer Larry Jack in June 2023. Hailey opted for a backless white gown that cascaded to the floor, accentuating her figure with a form-fitting silhouette and a turtleneck. Accompanied by her husband Justin Bieber, she complemented her attire with a luxurious blue handbag.
Dua Lipa boldly donned white attire at the wedding of designer Simon Jacquemus and Marc Maestri in France during August 2022. The songstress of "Levitating" captivated onlookers with her ethereal outfit, featuring a sheer snowy ensemble embellished with delicate flowers. Notably, Lipa's fashion choice was made by Jacquemus himself, lending an air of acceptability to her stylish transgression.
While celebrities often receive lenience in matters of wardrobe, wedding etiquette expert Diane Gottsman shared with We that there are specific situations where exceptions to this rule exist.
Wearing white or ivory to a wedding, unless you're the bride, is considered inappropriate as it may give the impression that you're seeking attention, according to Gottsman. However, there are exceptions such as when the bride specifically requests her bridesmaids or guests to wear white or if the wedding has an all-white theme, particularly if it takes place at a beach. A notable example of this was Solange Knowles' wedding to Alan Ferguson in November 2014, where all the guests, including her sister Beyoncé, wore white outfits to honor the couple's union in New Orleans. (Solange and Ferguson ended their marriage in December 2020.)
Cara Delevingne opted for a white ensemble as she took on the role of bridesmaid at her sister Poppy Delevingne's wedding to James Cook in May 2014. The supermodel looked stunning in a pearlescent dress featuring a charming ruffled hem.
Etiquette expert Gottsman suggests that if the bride doesn't explicitly state that guests can wear white, it's best to choose another color. She advises against contacting or asking the bride directly, as it may make her feel uncomfortable.
