Bobi, the remarkable canine who defied all odds, has sadly passed away at an astonishing age of 31 years and 165 days, according to Guinness World Records His extraordinary longevity has left a lasting legacy in the hearts of dog lovers worldwide

On Monday, Guinness World Records (GWR) confirmed that Bobi, the world's oldest dog ever, passed away at the age of 31 years and 165 days. Veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker had first announced his death at an animal hospital on Friday.

On Facebook, she expressed that even though he outlived every dog that has ever lived, his 11,478 days on earth would never suffice for those who held affection for him.

In February, Bob's owner, Leonel Costa, informed GWR that there were numerous factors contributing to his remarkable longevity. Costa stated that Bob always wandered freely, with no need for a leash or chain, and resided in a tranquil and serene environment. Additionally, his diet comprised of human food soaked in water to eliminate any seasonings.

He spent his whole life in Conqueiros, a small Portuguese village about 150 kilometers (93 miles) north of the capital Lisbon, often wandering around with cats.

Bobi, the purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo owned by his owner, defied expectations. While the typical lifespan of Rafeiro do Alentejos is 12-14 years, Bobi surpassed this by living double that time. In fact, Bobi's remarkable longevity led him to break a nearly century-old record, becoming the oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever recorded. Previously, this impressive title was held by Australian cattle dog Bluey, who lived until the age of 29 years and five months after being born in 1910.

However, Bobis story almost had a different ending.

When he and his three siblings were born in the familys woodshed, Costas father decided they already had too many animals at home.

Costa and his siblings believed that their parents had confiscated all the puppies for destruction. However, after a few sorrowful days, they stumbled upon Bobi, still breathing and securely concealed among a stack of logs.

Secretively concealing the puppy from their parents, the children managed to keep Bobi hidden until his presence was eventually revealed. By then, he had aged significantly, rendering him ineligible for euthanasia, and he proceeded to live a life that shattered records.

His 31st birthday party in May was attended by more than 100 people and a performing dance troupe, GWR said.

As Bobi aged, his eyesight worsened and walking became increasingly difficult. Despite these challenges, he continued to find joy in spending time with the cats in the backyard, taking more frequent rests, and napping by the warmth of the fire.

In May, Costa shared with GWR that Bobi holds a special place in his heart. "When I look at Bobi, it reminds me of the loved ones who were once a part of our family but are sadly no longer here, such as my father, brother, and grandparents who have passed away. Bobi symbolizes those generations."
