The highly-anticipated animated adaptation of the "Shimane Illuminati Saga" from the dark fantasy action series Blue Exorcist has released a new promotional video. The official Japanese Aniplex YouTube channel unveiled a sneak peek of the long-awaited adaptation of the seventh story arc from Kazue Katō's original manga. Additionally, the trailer announced that the Japanese rock band UVERworld will perform the opening song for the new Blue Exorcist anime, titled "Eye's Sentry." UVERworld previously contributed two anime theme songs for the original Blue Exorcist anime, including "Core Pride" for the first 12 episodes of Season 1 and "Itteki no Eikyō" for the entire second season.
The first official teaser of the new anime series for Blue Exorcist was released in September, much to the delight of fans. Shimane Illuminati Saga, the upcoming season, will be produced by Studio VOLN, known for their work on Karakuri Circus and I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. A-1 Pictures, the studio behind the previous Blue Exorcist anime series and other popular shows like Sword Art Online, will not be returning. The new season will be directed by Daisuke Yoshida, with Toshiya Ōno returning as the scriptwriter. Yurie Oohigashi will be in charge of character design and serve as the chief animation director for the show.
Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga is scheduled to debut in January 2024, following a seven-year gap since Blue Exorcist Season 2 and six years since the release of Blue Exorcist Season 1 in 2011. This prolonged wait for Season 3 is comparable to the wait Bleach fans endured for the animated adaptation of the final "Thousand-Year Blood War" story arc, which took a decade to materialize. Prior to Season 2, a theatrical animated movie titled Blue Exorcist: The Movie was released on December 28, 2012. Fans can anticipate the return of the original Japanese voice cast for the Shimane Illuminati Saga.
While fans eagerly await the new anime series, the Blue Exorcist manga is currently on hold as Katō recovers from COVID-19. The manga is expected to resume serialization in Jump Square magazine, published by Shueisha, in December. Additionally, Katō's artistic contributions extend beyond Blue Exorcist, as she served as the character designer for the Godzilla Singular Point anime TV series, which premiered on Netflix in 2021.
The Blue Exorcist anime series is currently available to stream on Crunchyroll, Hulu and Prime Video. Viz Media handles the English release of the manga.
