Highlights
Bloodborne's player count remains strong even after eight years since its release, outperforming many recent game releases in terms of popularity.
The game may potentially sell less than 3 million copies in its lifetime, but it has still surpassed Sony's sales expectations.
Although Bloodborne remains highly popular, there is no indication that it will be available on platforms other than PS4, despite speculation about a potential port or remastered version.
Newly compiled data suggests that Bloodborne, FromSoftware's Lovecraftian action RPG, continues to maintain an impressive number of players even after more than eight years since its release. Originally launched in March 2015 to critical acclaim, Bloodborne has garnered a strong demand for a PC port from its dedicated fanbase.
The game's triumph as an iconic soulslike title has been evident since its debut. Within just a few weeks, Bloodborne sold 1 million copies, and by September 2015, that number had doubled. Although Sony has not provided any further updates on its commercial performance, it is reasonable to assume that Bloodborne's sales figures still remain below 3 million copies to this day. Nevertheless, the success of Bloodborne has consistently surpassed the sales expectations set by the PlayStation maker.
The staying power of the game seems to be equally impressive. According to the July PSN user data compiled by third-party achievement tracker TrueTrophies, Bloodborne continues to surpass many recent releases. These include Forspoken, Dead Island 2, Wild Hearts, Like A Dragon: Ishin, and even the highly acclaimed Dead Space remake. While the actual player counts couldn't be determined, TrueTrophies provided some points of comparison. It estimated that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor had only 11.21% more PlayStation players than Bloodborne throughout July.
Meanwhile, FromSoftware's 2015 ARPG garnered a 20.32% larger player base on PlayStation compared to Dead Island 2 during the observed period. It's worth noting that Dead Island 2 achieved its biggest launch ever in May, selling two million copies across all platforms. However, it seems that most of those sales did not originate from PlayStation owners or that there hasn't been significant engagement from PS4 and PS5 gamers in July, at least in comparison to Bloodborne's dedicated fan base.
In addition to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, there are other highly anticipated 2023 releases that Bloodborne has yet to surpass in terms of popularity, such as Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16, Hogwarts Legacy, and the Resident Evil 4 remake. While it's uncertain if any of these titles will drop below Bloodborne's current player count on PlayStation anytime soon, the fact that TrueTrophies ranks FromSoftware's soulslike game among the top 200 most popular games on Sony's platforms after eight years since its release is a remarkable testament to its devoted following.
The creator of Dark Souls should undoubtedly be aware of the enduring popularity of Bloodborne, especially considering that all PlayStation developers have access to detailed player analytics. Despite numerous past rumors suggesting the possibility of a port or remaster of Bloodborne, there is currently no concrete evidence indicating that the game is any closer to becoming available on platforms other than the PS4, as it has been since 2015.
