Cinderella has officially received the Certified Fresh designation on Rotten Tomatoes. The beloved Disney princess movie, which is a retelling of the 1697 fairy tale, follows the story of an orphan living with her wicked stepmother who finds love with the Prince, thanks to her Fairy Godmother. When Cinderella was released in 1950, it became the second princess movie from Disney, following the success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. Together, these films are part of a rich tradition that includes 14 other movies such as Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Frozen.
Rotten Tomatoes has recently granted the iconic Disney princess movie Cinderella the Certified Fresh status. With the addition of ButteredPopcorn's Carson Timar's review as the 40th review, the film, currently boasting a remarkable 98% score, has successfully met the certification criteria. This achievement signifies that every Disney princess movie in the official Walt Disney Animation Studios canon, with the exception of Pocahontas from 1995, has now attained the Certified Fresh status. Pocahontas, with a Rotten score of 54%, falls short of meeting the eligibility requirements for the certification.
Cinderella Remains One Of Disney's Strongest-Performing Princess Movies
Cinderella's Rotten Tomatoes certification has been a long time in the making. The delay can be attributed to the fact that it premiered before Rotten Tomatoes existed and the site focuses on contemporary films. However, Cinderella has always been one of the most successful Disney princess movies, with the highest Rotten Tomatoes score (only 97% behind Snow White).
Upon release, Cinderella was a massive success, earning $182 million from a $2 million budget. It even outperformed films like All About Eve and Annie Get Your Gun to become the highest-grossing domestic movie of 1950. The movie also received three Oscar nominations, the most for a Disney princess film until the Silver Age of the late 1980s introduced beloved movies like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.
The movie has also introduced several iconic songs to the world of cinema, including "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" and "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes." Its success and iconic status were so influential that it sparked numerous retellings of the Cinderella story, such as A Cinderella Story, Sneakerella, and the 2015 live-action remake starring Lily James. Given its enduring legacy, it is only fitting that Cinderella would receive this distinction, regardless of the time it took.
