Bellatrix Lestrange, one of the most twisted characters in the Harry Potter series, stands out among the many witches and wizards portrayed. Rising from humble beginnings, she eventually became the trusted right hand of Voldemort, one of the most dreaded dark wizards in wizarding history. Throughout her existence, Bellatrix caused immense heartache as she displayed a disturbing lack of concern for those around her.
Although ample information about Bellatrix's life is available, fans of the Harry Potter series will need to delve deeper to uncover the finer details. As a formidable and long-established witch, she displayed little inclination to utilize her immense power for anything remotely good.
The Childhood Of Bellatrix Lestrange
Bellatrix may have been conditioned to have a disdainful attitude towards others from an early age. Born in 1951, she grew up in a privileged environment, surrounded by an explicit pride derived from her affiliation with a powerful pure-blood family. A defining aspect of her childhood was the fact that her family belonged to the exclusive group known as the Sacred Twenty-Eight, representing one of the few remaining pure-blood wizarding families. Such a strong emphasis on pure blood led Bellatrix and her family to sever ties with others, including her own sister Andromeda and cousin Sirius Black.
Eventually, Bellatrix found herself enrolled in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, although limited information exists regarding her time there. However, it is known that she was sorted into Slytherin House, a placement which likely amplified her inclination towards darker and more dominant magical tendencies.
Bellatrix And the First Wizarding War
After her time at Hogwarts, Bellatrix rose to become a Death Eater under Voldemort, further augmenting her power. During this period, she developed twisted affection for Voldemort, although he was primarily focused on his own malevolent schemes. While it was not surprising to hear of numerous dark crimes committed by Bellatrix during the First Wizarding War, the available details mainly highlight her unwavering loyalty to Voldemort. Even after Voldemort's apparent demise on the night he attempted to kill the Potters, Bellatrix remained dedicated to him.
This era of Bellatrix's loyalty greatly influenced the wizarding world's trajectory. At some point, she acquired Neville Longbottom's parents, Frank and Alice, subjecting them to horrific torture in search of information. The Longbottoms' minds were irrevocably damaged by this torturous ordeal, forever altering their mental state. Fans of the Harry Potter series are aware that Bellatrix's preferred curse in this case was the Cruciatus Curse, capable of inflicting prolonged and excruciating pain on its victims. Although Bellatrix failed to extract the desired information from the Longbottoms regarding Voldemort, she undoubtedly relished in demolishing the minds of two esteemed members of the Order of the Phoenix.
The Capture of Bellatrix Lestrange
Regrettably, Bellatrix's use of the Cruciatus Curse to inflict suffering upon the Longbottoms did not go well. Being a Death Eater already put her in conflict with the law, but her actions only exacerbated the situation, leading to her eventual capture alongside a group of fellow Death Eaters. Although the Ministry of Magic does not always make sound decisions, sentencing Bellatrix to a lifetime in Azkaban was perhaps one of their wisest choices. Although she would later be released, the wizarding community had no knowledge that the fervent follower of Voldemort would eventually regain her freedom when the dark wizard returned to power.
It is arguably for the best that Bellatrix never faltered in her allegiance to Voldemort, as it made her an obvious candidate to be reinstated in his ranks after his proper resurrection. She remained in Azkaban for over a decade, and while there is little information about her actions during her imprisonment, it is evident that even years of confinement failed to alter her loyalties.
Bellatrix And The Second Wizarding War
Bellatrix would not remain imprisoned in Azkaban indefinitely, as Voldemort would ensure her eventual release. He freed her from her dark confinement due to her fervent loyalty to him, and her proficiency in the dark arts likely played a role as well. After her initial release, Bellatrix would initially be discreet, but it wouldn't be long before she would resume causing chaos. She would resurface during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries in The Order of the Phoenix, not only defeating powerful adversaries like Nymphadora Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt but also murdering her own cousin, Sirius Black. Although she would ultimately fail to accomplish her master's objectives, she would manage to escape with him, unlike many others present.
Following the previous incident, Bellatrix joined the plan to assassinate Dumbledore in The Half-Blood Prince. She made an unbreakable vow, compelling Snape to assist young Draco Malfoy in his mission. During this time, Bellatrix became pregnant and gave birth to Voldemort's child, a storyline present only in the book and stage-play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.
Bellatrix took part in the intense battle known as the Battle of the Seven Potters in Deathly Hallows: Part One, although she failed to make any significant contributions. While captured in their mission to destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes, Bellatrix made a fatal mistake by revealing the contents of her Gringotts vault, but she also took pleasure in torturing Hermione using the Cruciatus Curse. Prior to the group's escape, Bellatrix fatally wounded Dobby with a thrown knife. She reappeared prominently during the Battle of Hogwarts.
During the final battle at Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows: Part Two, Bellatrix fought against several opponents, including Luna Lovegood, Hermoine Granger, and Ginny Weasley, whom she almost fatally injured. However, her actions infuriated Molly Weasley, leading to a duel between the two. In a decisive moment, Molly managed to defeat and ultimately kill Bellatrix, bringing an end to her reign of evil just moments before her master's ultimate demise.
