Josh Harnett, the star of Oppenheimer, has rebuffed claims that he and Harrison Ford had a significant conflict while filming Hollywood Homicide in 2003. The film, which followed the shenanigans of two LA detectives, was a commercial failure, grossing just over $50 million on a budget of $75 million, much to the disappointment of both actors. The movie was also said to have been marred by incidents of on-set fighting between Harnett and Ford. However, Harnett has since clarified in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the extent of their disagreements has been exaggerated.
The media thrived on drama, especially during that time, but the truth was that we actually had a great working relationship. While we may have had some differences of opinion on set regarding the script, there was a lot of collaboration and rewriting happening. Unfortunately, our professional disagreements were misconstrued as personal animosity. In reality, there was no tension on set. I may have jokingly referred to him as "the bane of my existence" during the press tour for the film, but that was just his way of teasing me. All in all, it was a positive working experience.
Hollywood's Greatest Feuds Are Starting To Cool Off
The supposed feud between Harnett and Ford is not the only example of overstated conflicts in Hollywood. Major feuds that once seemed to have a significant impact on the industry are being reexamined and questioned. For instance, the long-standing feud between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel seems to have been resolved, as Johnson is set to return to the Fast & Furious franchise, despite previous statements that he would never work with Diesel again.
But Johnson and Diesel are not the only ones. Recently, Ford himself revealed that his supposed feud with Brad Pitt was nothing more than a misunderstanding, and that he now deeply respects the other actor. This comes more than 25 years after the tense production of The Devil's Own caused a major rift between the two stars. Even the satirical feud between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is set to culminate in the upcoming blockbuster Deadpool 3, where both actors will star together.
The tensions that have plagued Hollywood could benefit from some relief, especially since the pandemic forced actors to take a break from their sets and stay at home. The opportunity to collaborate on blockbuster projects has also aided in the process of forgiveness. With the upcoming 2023 Writer's Guild of America strike, another chance for reconciliation may arise. Although not all disputes will be resolved, many are gradually dissipating over time. Fortunately, Harnett was able to address the misunderstanding prior to the release of Oppenheimer, and there are likely numerous other actors who are eager to share their own stories of resolution.
