They carry out acts of terror and dark magic, often causing harm to those who oppose Voldemort's ideals, particularly targeting Muggle-borns. Renowned for their extremist pure-blood supremacist beliefs, they openly defy wizarding laws without hesitation. Adorned with the Dark Mark on their left forearm, they can also conjure it in the sky using the spell "Morsmodre". In "The Goblet of Fire", the Dark Mark is depicted as a vibrant green skull with a snake emerging from its mouth.

Emerging before their eyes, the colossal skull resembled a cluster of emerald stars, with a serpent extending from its mouth akin to a tongue. As they witnessed its ascent, it grew higher and higher, blazing in a haze of greenish smoke, carving its image against the midnight sky like a newly discovered constellation.

The Dark Mark is an emblem of loyalty to Voldemort and a potent magical curse. It is evoked in the sky whenever a Death Eater carries out a murder, inflicts harm, or commits an act of terrorism at the behest of Voldemort. How Does a Wizard Become a Death Eater?

Additionally, there are several wizards who align themselves with Voldemort and the Death Eaters without being official members, such as Dolores Umbridge, Quirinus Quirrell, Mafalda Hopkirk, and Narcissa Malfoy. Interestingly, Narcissa Malfoy, in order to safeguard her family during the Second Wizarding War, deceived the Dark Lord.

Voldemort's inner circle consisted of Death Eaters, individuals personally chosen by him. However, certain members joined out of fear or blackmail rather than true loyalty or agreement with his beliefs. In order to become a Death Eater, one must harbor dark intentions, regardless of whether it is motivated by fear or not. Nevertheless, merely having such intentions does not guarantee approval or the coveted "membership" status from Voldemort. Rather, strict adherence to a set of rules is required to enter the ranks of the Dark Lord's elite followers.

While there are exceptions, some of these requirements include but are not limited to:

Death Eaters must hate Albus Dumbledore and be willing to kill him.

They must master the Dark Arts and be willing to use the Unforgivable Curses.

They cannot claim that Tom Riddle is not of pure blood.

Death Eaters must immediately respond to the Dark Lord’s call.
