Summary
Executive producer Sam Esmail provides a promising update on Peacock's Battlestar Galactica reboot, revealing that he just read a "great outline" for the show.
The reboot was initially announced in 2019, but there have been limited updates since then. Now that the WGA strike is over, development can finally resume. This reboot will introduce a new cast, giving it a fresh perspective rather than continuing from where it left off.
Executive producer Sam Esmail brings exciting news for the highly anticipated Battlestar Galactica reboot. This new adaptation looks to reimagine the beloved cult sci-fi series from the 1970s, which originally aired between 2004 and 2009. Following the success of several shorter-lived spinoffs and expansions, Battlestar Galactica is now gearing up for a thrilling comeback as a reboot. Peacock first announced this exciting project in 2019. Moreover, alongside the development of the reboot series, efforts are also being made to finally bring a Battlestar Galactica movie to life after a lengthy struggle in development since around 2010.
After a long period of no communication, Esmail finally speaks up about the Peacock Battlestar Galactica reboot in a recent interview with Deadline. Despite the significant setback caused by the lengthy WGA strike during the summer, it appears that progress is still being made. Read Esmail's full statement below.
Everything We Know About The Battlestar Galactica Reboot
"Regarding the movie version, I cannot provide any insight. However, in relation to the TV series, we are actively working on it. In fact, I recently reviewed an exceptional outline that is in excellent condition. Due to the conclusion of the strike, specifically the WGA strike, we have resumed the development process."
Announced in 2019, Peacock's Battlestar Galactica revival has been relatively quiet regarding updates. One significant development is that the show will be led by Esmail, notable for creating Mr. Robot and Homecoming. Currently, Esmail is also working on a sci-fi thriller movie called Leave the World Behind.
Regarding the Peacock reboot of Battlestar Galactica, there are more questions than answers. The project being referred to as a "reboot" instead of a continuation implies that none of the original cast members, such as Katee Sackhoff, Edward James Olmos, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Grace Park, and Mary McDonnel, will be returning. Hence, fans should not expect to see them on the show.
The plot of the Battlestar Galactica reboot seems to stay true to its predecessors, centered around a group of human survivors seeking a new home planet after the destruction of their twelve planets by the Cylons. Esmail is collaborating on the series with Michael Lesslie, who will act as the showrunner. Despite Esmail's reassurances, the Battlestar Galactica reboot has not received an official order for a series yet, which means there is no guarantee that it will actually happen.
