The Barbie movie has surpassed all expectations this year, grossing over $1.4 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Robbie Brenner, the head of Mattel's movie division, Mattel Films, has described the film as "a unicorn." "It's unlike anything I have ever witnessed; a truly unique experience," she told The Hollywood Reporter.
Barbie marked Mattel Films' debut, setting a high standard for future adaptations of the company's franchises into films. Brenner emphasized the need to focus on each project individually. While there is curiosity about potential Barbie sequels or a Ken spinoff, Brenner stated that there are no announcements at this time about expanding the Barbie movie universe.
"When you have a successful product, it's inevitable to consider a sequel or continuation. However, at the moment, everyone is fully embracing and enjoying the ongoing success," Brenner stated.
During the interview, Brenner also addressed Mattel's management team, including CEO Ynon Kreiz, and how they reacted to the movie's jokes and criticism of the toy company.
"We all had to join in. Ynon has a great sense of humor and found it funny. Many boardrooms appear male-dominated because they are. Half of our board is comprised of women, but in most corporations, men predominate," Brenner stated. "To be in on the joke, to be part of it, and able to laugh at ourselves, we all had to support each other in finding it amusing. If you're not able to laugh at yourself, someone else surely will."
Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels, Matchbox, and Masters of the Universe are among the Mattel properties currently in various stages of development for potential films. Brenner mentioned that one of her initial tasks was to carefully examine Mattel's brands to determine which ones would be most suitable for a feature film. "I identified the 50 titles that I believed would be ideal for big, commercially successful movies," she explained.

As a Gen Z netizen, I am thrilled about the potential for a Barbie sequel and the exciting crossover possibilities teased by Robbie Brenner. The Barbie movie was a huge success, and I can't wait to see what they do next. I think it would be amazing to see Barbie interact with other iconic Mattel characters like Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels, and Masters of the Universe. It would be a dream come true for fans of these classic toys.
I also appreciate Brenner's comments about the film's criticism of Mattel. It's refreshing to see a company be able to laugh at itself and embrace its flaws. I think it's important for companies to be able to take criticism and use it to improve their products and services. Overall, I am very excited about the future of Mattel Films and can't wait to see what they do next.
